Default control surface play??

Hey,

I just got a DW foamies 38" yak 54 and after i installed the servos, im noticing a lot of play in the control surfaces. My linkages fit fine and ive got brand new hs55's. However i still have like a 1/2 inch of travel in each direction. Is this normal or am i doing something wrong?

Sounds like either your servo is loose or you have pretty sloppy hinges...

It might be that your "Z" bends are too big. The part that fits through the hole in the controll horn may be too long, and that can cause play.

I don't see any reason why this isn't normal. It's a foamie, and usually this is the case.

Lol. I guess I'm the only one who cares if my foamies are sloppy.

2 words, Liquid Shim. Shoot a small drop of CA into the ply control horn hole (if there is a Z-bend there) and then work it until it the CA kicks. If there was any slop there before, it won't be there now.

If you want total precision(for a foamie) and you're making your own foamies, double bevel the aileron side and cut the wing side flat(or double bevel for insane throws!). I used to use CA hinges but found out that Dubro micro hinges are the ticket for a precision setup. Used a drop or two of Sumo glue to hold them in. And once they're in they stay there. Also went with the (Dubro)little square brass quick connects and carbon horns(ply will do after soaking with CA) then using carbon rods on ailerons and Power Pro fishing line on the pull pull for rudder/elev. You can drill out the quick connects to whatever size carbon rod you're using if the hole is too small. Yes it will weigh a little more and it's harder to assemble, but you won't have any slop and the precision will more than make up for a few extra grams. And the joint can be made so close you won't need to use tape to seal it. Can't believe I didn't do this before. I've had it with tape that comes off and splits down the hinge line. Not to mention the slop! My 2 cent deposit.

tried a dab of CA in the control horn and it worked GREAT! Flew noticeably better than before! It hovers much nicer b.c all the surfaces aren't flappin' in the breeze...

I use that method on everything from foamies to 200mph screamers . I should get Billy Mays to market it for me and make millions... (Holding pinky to mouth "muahaha").
