Default 3W 85

So what is the deal with the 3w85? The forums are pretty silent. Is there anybody running one of these. I figure one of two things either nobody has one or they are so busy flying they are not spending enough time on the computer to help me make up my mind.

Lets hear about this new engine without having a brand war! I know all about the DA85 and their customer service. I am looking for info on the 3W 85.

I am putting one on a QQ Python this week with a pipe...They are great running motors, especially on a can or pipe.

I have one pulling a 33% SD-Yak, the engine is spinning a mejzlik 26x10 at 7100 rpms and a 27x10 at 6600 roms with the in-cowl muffler from 3W. It is a little heavier than the DA85 but it is worth for the power it puts out.
When I first installed it it shook like crzy, I thought it was something wrong with the engine(it`s pretty big for a single) but after trying many things I found out that the engine box on my plane was vibrating to the sides, it was very weak for this particular engine, so I reinforced the engine box and made it really stiff, now it vibrates normally like any other single cylinder.
Starts easy, transitions are great and the power is incredible. very good engine.

I had a 3W85CS, one awesome motor.
It was turning a Mejzlik 28x10 at 6900rpm when it was well warm( not on initial start up.) It used to run the K&S 1090 pipe.
Took a lot of work to make it work properly.

Very smooth in operation. Beautiful idle.

I reckon you have to be careful with the cooling on these motors. Mine was very tight

The reason i talk in the past tense, well um i wrote it off in a crash

I have one of those Yaks...never built it but did notice how thin the motor box was so I could see why it would shake!

Well I believe I have made up my mind. I have a 33% SD yak I am going to put it in. I will pay close attention to the motorbox to ensure it is not the weak link. I have 2 buddies that have a DA 85 so we should get some real world numbers for a comparason. It probably wont be for a month or so, but I will keep you posted.

What I did to the engine box was to install two triangles of 1/4 thick lite plywood on the sides that go from the first former (the one the cowl ataches to) to just behind the aluminum angles in the front. Two triangles on each side, top and bottom. With the space that`s left between them, the triangles are good mounts for ignitions and smoke pumps.
The engine box flexes to the sides, not up and down, and that movement to the sides makes the plane shake sidesways (the wings shake to the front and back instead of up and down) and this vibration I have found it to be more destructive than the normal one.
If you install a ZDZ80RV (normal not super) or a 3W75, 3w70, there should be no problem with the engine box since it was designed around a 3w75.
I hope this helps you guys to make the first flights without having to worry about the engine taking apart your planes!

Hi!
I have one, intend runnin' it on ComARF Extra 260 or 300SX 2.6 meter. I should say that 3W is 3W, I've just finished the break-in and. The transitions and idle are perfetct, easyly swings 26x10 3W prop up over 7000 rpm. I intend using Biella carbon 27x10 or Mejzlick, have not decided yet. Anyway, the test-run of my engine was more than satisfactory. By the way, can anynone write any results of CS? I suppose the results won't differ a lot))
