if i had an 85 to put in something i would get the QQ yak 101 no questions asked. The wing loading is so light and the power is perfect.

One of my favorite planes was a DR Hobbies 2.6m Extra with a DA-85 and a pitts muffler. It came in at an even 23 lbs. and was a rocket

I had the QQ Python with an 85 on a Slimline Pitts, and the plane had awesome power for anything that you wanted to throw at it. It would snatch the plane out of a hover and pull endless vertical. I sold the Python when the new 101" Yak came out, and I think that the 85 pulls it even stronger. Both of these planes have incredible performance on a stock 85 with a pretty basic exhaust. The yak is hovering at about 1/4 throttle, and I really made no attempt to keep the plane lite.

I weighed my DA 85 with the header, coupler, clamps, and pipe, and it weighed 5.15 lbs. Weighed my DA 100 with STOCK mufflers, and it weighed 6.55 lbs. Almost a pound and a half difference WITHOUT the ignitions. Since the 85 ignition only has one lead for the spark plug, it would be slightly less weight than the ignition of the 100. And with a pipe, the DA 85 makes just as much power as the DA 100. Tached my DA 100 on a Mezjlik 27x10, got 6240 rpms. Tached the DA 85 on a pipe, 6440 rpms. 200 rpms more. BIG difference.
dbcaster/Vic3D: I bet you that the 85 on the same plane would be very close if not the same power as the 106. You can fly the 100/106 all you want but a lighter plane makes for better flying characteristics, not to mention its easier to fly slow smooth and precise. Just my .02 If anyone here has a flight pass on Higher Plane Productions, check out my freestyle with the Python on an 85 out in Tucson: http://flightpass.higherplaneproduct...2_itemId=14063 Seth

This is an awesome thread as I am also very interested in the two routes. Now what about the lighter 100cc class motors such as BME?
To me it seems there is no replacement for displacement. |

I am not sure what pipe you are running but your numbers are different than mine. My total weight on the 85/1090 combo was 6lbs. 4oz. The 100 was 6lbs. 7oz. RPM of both with a PAU 27 3db prop 6400 for both. This is with the new 100 that turns 100 to 200 more rpm than the older version.

He was probably using a Greeve's pipe, which is probably lighter than the KS 1090, but his numbers still seem off to me. I don't see how a DA 85 with header, coupler, and pipe could only be 5.15 lbs. when the 85 weighs around 4 lbs. without anything on it.
Disclaimer: I'm not trying to call anyone out, just saying it how I see it. |

Exactly, I think the Greeves is around 4oz. Lighter than the 1090. I believe the 85 alone is around 4.23 lbs.

There's three planes that haven't been mentrioned in this thread. All are Wild Hare.
The 41% Giles (I have one) works with an 85 for anything you want to do. Over 2,000 square inches of wing area at about 24 pounds. The 35% Extra is another. Another I know from experience is the 35% Edge. The Edge will fall in the 22.5 to 23 pound range with an 85, with 1985 plus inches of wing area. All of them can be flown with single servos on every surface. Use the right batteries and you don't need any kind of power distribution to have a steady and reliable 6.6v and gobs of amperage to the servos for a day of flying. So you have performance, light weights, and lower costs to round out the deal. There's two videos of the 35% Edge using an 85 on the Wild Hare site. See for yourself. |

Good luck. I'm up north now. You would most assuredly like it though. It will be some time before I'm back at home with time to get to fun things.
BTW, I'm still cursing you about that Ultimate. As soon as it went into the pick up I knew I was in trouble. Because of that plane I ended up buying a trailer and I figure it had to be your fault
