Hey guys,
I have an older (about 8 to 9 years old) Pirate models 37% Giles 202, powered with a 3W-100, weight is just over 33 lb, CG is in the aft envelope of the plans recommended CG. Airplane generaly flys okay but in loops and pulls to virtical it requires a lot of right rudder to maintain tracking, also inverted requires a fair amount of down elevator. My first ideas are to put some more shims for right thrust and perhaps more doen thrust. It dose presently have about 2.5* right and there may be a degree of so of down? This is my first large scale gasser. All thoughts and inputs are appreciated. Tom

On my Giles G-300 years ago I found that it did not like too much elevator deflection or it would roll out of loops similar to yours. Before you go to changing thrust angles, try reducing the elevator deflection just a little at a time and see if that helps. Also, try to adjust your balance to just behind dead center balanced. Mine also did not like to be tail heavy, it would have a tendancy to tip stall in tight turns...

Scott,
Thanks for your input, I have been following your thread on the Carden ARF. ![]() I only have about 12* up elevator, loops and cuben 8's are pretty big. I can't get the CG any further forward without adding weight, batteries are up against the firewall now. Tom

Even if you have to add weight, do it temporally to see how your Giles reacts to balance changes. It's the most important thing to get correct first before you can move on to other trimming problems. Get the plane as neutral as possible so you can see the true plane's flying caricaturists. I really like Peter Goldsmith's approach to trimming, it's straight forward and progressive in the proper steps.
Something else that I remember about the Giles, it was a fast lander and I tried adding flaps to the radio mix and dropped about 10 degrees on the finial approach along with some down elevator, boy did that slow it down! It made the landings a lot of fun to do, kinda like a STOL...!!! Scott |

Yea, landing speed is a little on the fast side, wing loading is high due to weight and low wing area, it only has 100" span.

At the time I had my radio set up to do flaps and spoilerons, flaps to make the landings more fun and spoilerons to add just a little reflex to reduce wing rock on harriers.
