WING TUBES: For just $69.95 you can get yourself a 3' CF wing tube and save 3 oz over out of date aluminum. And how easy is the installation? 1) remove aluminum wing tube and give to son for baseball bat. 2) slide CF tube in place. How easy is that? We've jumped on the wing tube, we smacked it on cement in 30 degree weather, we've flown the heck out of them and they don't fail. You will throw 10 planes away before you even nick this tube. Is there any other product that offers that? No way. You will never need another wing tube in your life!! There are over 1000 TBM CF tubes in use today.
These tubes are manufactured by winding CF filament around an aluminum mandrel, then impregnating with resin. Curing at an elevated temperature and pressure, and then sizing the OD by sanding. The surface is treated for improved appearance. The resultant tube is extremely hard, much harder than aluminum. The weight and size is very consistent, unlike the aluminum tubes made today which are badly out of round.
When a 250 lb man stands on the tube with the tube supported off of the ground, the tube barely deflects much less starts any crack!!

WARRANTY: Wing tubes have a lifetime guarantee. Buy one and keep it for the rest of your life. Sell your plane with the stock aluminum tube and keep the CF one!! If your tube fails under typical usage as an airplane wing tube (i.e. you didn't back over it with your car or you cut it too short or drilled a hole in the wrong place), we will replace the tube at no charge. This is for in flight failure only and does not include crash damage. Warranty good for the original owner only.
Calculations and theory comparing a CF tube to an aluminum tube.
George R. Hicks Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation (Aerodynamics/Performance Group) aircraft engineer and IMAC R/C pilot provided the following computations. The calculations compare an aluminum tube to the graphite tube theoretically. These calculations bear out that the CF tube is about double the strength of aluminum. Real life testing backs up the theory. We supported an aluminum tube (.035" wall) and a carbon fiber tube 4" apart, and held them at the ends. We then squeezed the center of the tubes together using a strap and ratchet. This was a direct comparison of CF against aluminum. The CF deflected about 1/2 as much as the aluminum as the load was applied. The aluminum failed by bending in the center. The CF then went back to its original shape. So this verifies that the CF is twice as stiff and has a higher strength than the aluminum. The following information predicts that the CF would deflect similarly to the aluminum, but in fact, the CF deflects much less.
Properties for Aluminum (6061-T6)
For 6061-T6 Aluminum you can expect the following properties:
Fty = 35 ksi (tension stress at which the material's stress/strain curve goes nonlinear)
Fcy = 34 ksi (compression stress at which the material's stress/strain curve goes nonlinear)
Ftu = 42 ksi (ultimate stress -failure occurs)
E = 9,900 ksi (modulus of elasticity) ksi/(in/in)

Carbon Graphite
Obviously this material has a stress/strain curve which is nearly linear until failure, much like glass. Because of this they provide allowable strain levels instead of stress. I made the assumption that the CF is a standard 0 deg / 90 deg weave. This is more conservative than a 0/+45/90/-45 weave. I assumed a fiber fraction of 60% and came up with the following.

E=9,000 ksi (modulus of elasticity) note that it is very close to aluminum...this means that for a given load one would expect nearly the same deflection for an equal size tube.
The max allowable strain was 9,400 microstrain which equates to 84.6 ksi of stress...this is roughly twice that of aluminum's ultimate allowable. This seems to show that the tube will deflect nearly the same amount for a given load but the carbon graphite can go twice as far.
There's not much we can do with deflection other than validate the elastic modulus for both aluminum and carbon graphite...they should mimic the P*L^3 / ( 3*E*I ) equation for deflections. Since E and I are the same for both materials and tube geometry's, you'd expect the same deflection for a given load P.
If you did a cantilever bending test of these tubes (Do=1.5", Di=1.408" twall=0.046" with a length of 2-feet...one foot to hold on to the thing) You should find that the aluminum tube fails at a maximum moment of 3,113 in-lb ( or 130 lb of pull at 2-ft)
The carbon graphite tube should fail at 6,270 in-lb (or 261 lb of pull at 2-ft)
A 300 pound guy standing at the center of the 3-foot long tube should create a moment of only 2700in-lb at the center of the tube...with an allowable of 6270 in-lb, no wonder it didn't break with someone heavy on it. When I worked with a company out west on their wing design, I estimated a maximum root bending moment of around 2,800 in-lb...this is as much as the 33% airplane could ever generate. a 40% airplane would be more, but certainly not double. Probably a 20% increase if you simply ratio the scale factors, so you're looking at 3360in-lb of moment....it looks like the carbon tube affords you a safety factor of 2.
