I recently purchased a supertigre 2300 engine direct from Tower and one direct from my local Hobby Shop (Hobby Town). I’m having a heck of a time getting it to run right. I’ve followed the manual, opened the needle valve 3 turns, tried to dial it in and yet I can’t get it to work. It will run at high speed no problem. Then I’ll idle down to Idle.. it will go back and forth several times no problem, then when I go back to Idle and try to go back again to HIGH it will just outright DIE. I’ve checked all fuel lines, ensured the carb is snug to the case and tight… Nothing.. I’ve been flying for MANY years and have not had this problem with other engines… I’ve read many posts regarding problems with the CARB, some users replacing it with the OS7D carb. I’ve tried the pinch method, all that does is kill the motor… It seems to run fine then dies for no apparent reason.. I replaced the stock junky plug that comes with it w/ an OS Plug.. NO luck.. I know it's running rich cause I just went through a gallon of gas quicker then I can spell G.A.S ... Yikes.. at 15 bux a gallon here.. I'm beginning to wish I bought a GASSER... So I'm stuck w/ what I have... PLEASE PLEASE help here.. what do you suggest? I’ve set the carb to 3 turns then even tried to lean it out to have the motor increase in speed. All it does is sound the same, no real increase and then die.. I don’t hear it rev up at all.. nor does it rev up when I pinch the fuel line.. Thanks! |

Even thought I started a very long thead on RCU about this engine as the "1st Nominee for hall of Shame", Bill Bax at hobby services say all the problems have been fixed. (That's his remarks)Contact him for help.

I've sent a message to Tower's tech support and will now contact Bill.
After more fuel and messing around with it, I've now come to the conclusion the engine "appears" to run "o.k" if the Glow Plug is always hot.. Take it away and nothing but problems.. so after 2 hours of fumblin just to get it going, now I'm a little closer.. WIll swap out fuel and see if that makes a difference.. running 2/4 cycle 10% nitro.... Off to Bills email I go.. |

Ditch the supertigre carb, get a Perry carb and a Perry pump and this motor will not run better.....

flyin4fun....that was exactly why I started the thread on RCU..people buying this engine and having to spend major bucks with a pump and new carb...just to get a $149 engine to work. At that point, you could buy an O.S. and be done with it! The engine WILL work..but only within a narrow band of INSTALLATION STANDARDS..see tower's README on this.

I have this same motor on a 1/4 scale plane and it runs great on 5% nitro!! You didnt mention what percentage of nitro you are running, but try 5% you might like it alot better and it will probably run alot nicer!

I'm running 10% Nitro right now... I will change the fuel line to a larger size.. And Yes, boy does this thing suck the fuel.. A few flights and you're out a gallon of gas..
I think I'll be ditching these ST's and going with GAS... Too much $$ for fuel.. arrgh! great engine, just not worth the cash for fuel.. Any suggestion on a replacement for the 2300 & 3250? I have multiple 1.40 size kits that will need them.. My only complaint on OS and SAITO is the cost..

So after my last post, I decided to go out change the fuel line to large diameter and try again. Engine started up just fine.. Needle at 3 Turns out.. Fast & idle response good.. Things seemed "OK"... I pulled the glow plug igniter from the bird and a few revs up things were going well.. Then, Sputtered and died.. From what I can gather now, it seems to run "FINE" if I have the glow plug on constantly. Once I remove the igniter, things tend to fall apart.. I'm getting a ton of fuel, since its spitting out all over the place. on me, the ground you name it.. Exhaust everywhere LOL .. I thought maybe TOO Much fuel causing it to die (flooding the glow I guess)... so I leaned it out, but that didnt do anything. High speed runs at leaner setting just bogged down the engine till it died.. My problems seem to be going from Low speed idle to high and also when removing the glow plug igniter..
Any more suggestions would be aprpeciated... (I've even tried needle valve adjustments from 1.5 - 5 turns, no luck). Arrghhhhhhhh..... STUPID TIGER engine.. |

do you have it mounted inverted . if so that could be the problem
i have a ST 91 ,3000, 4500 all but the 4500 will operate inverterd the 4500,s head design will not tolerate the inverted position fuel puts out the glow plug also do you have a muffler with adequate flow my original muffler on the 4500 was too restrictive and resulted in problems like you described at full throttle it has high muffler pressure and tank pressure and once it is adjusted there you idle down and the muffler pressure bleeds off and when trying to reaccel the engine goes way lean and dies good luck also note that i have never had to replace any ST carbs among mine or my friends ST engines |

Hmm.. I have it mounted sideways w/ a pitts muffler on it.. not fully inverted ... I could put a restrictor on the pressure line to force pressure into the carb. I've got a one way check valve I could use there.. I'll give that a whirl and see what happens..
I was told the carb problems were fixed on the newer ST's.. so I'd hate to replace them. I have a 4500 NIB that I'll never use.. Probably stick it on Ebay or trade for a gasser. still in the box. |

I ran mine on 10% oil and 10% nitro it ran flawlessly, but it need a fine adjustment of your tank, the height of the tank is very critical but when it is spot on and fuel line is not to long it wil serve you well! Joen |

A friend of mine has a 3250 and a 2300 and runs both these with a four stroke plug. He almost gave the 3250 away as a bad joke until some one told him to use a four stroke plug. It now runs really good and has lots of power. Just check the plug to piston clearance as the four stroke plug is slightly longer.
