There is a used 3W 36% EXTRA 330S out there, and was wondering if these are sweet. Have not read much about them, and currently considering to buy a aw 260, this new dietrich extra 300 coming out, or the ef 110 yak for my next imac plane. Thanks 871

My buddy has one and it is a good flying plane, the only drawback in my opinion is that it is a big airplane and a 100cc engine is not quite big enough since they come in at around 30 to 32 pounds which isn't bad for the amount of wing it has.

At your elevation, make sure you check out the 3W-106 at AircraftInternational.com. Or if you prefer DA, would suggest some KS 1060 pipes. Good luck which-ever plane you pick. those are good choices. I had an AW 260 myself and it was excellent.

Or you could look at it as an opurtunity to shoe horn a 157 or 170 into it and have awesome power at your altitude!

I have the 40% 3W 330 on a DA150 and Cans at 2,600ft @ 38lbs. It is not overpowered by any means but it has enough to fly long striaght verticals with authority on a 3-blade. 32 lbs on a 100 - well pipes may be in order for sure esp at 5,000 ft.
If the 36% is anything like the 40% it flies fantastic. |

I had a 32% with a heavy 78B2 on the nose. I was 3D'ing with the 78 and a 26x10 and turning about 6500's. My 32 was weighing in around 26#. That was circa 2000.
With todays stuff, like the A123's, you can knock a servo off for the rudder, as a 8711 would work excellent, and the lighter weight 100's around now, I see no reason to get a 36% in any heavier than 28#. My 32 tracked straighter than a NASCAR!!! Great flying bird!!! Prop for the type of flying you are doing. 27x10 for 3D stuff and some IMAC as well. The 25x12 3b Mejzlik for IMAC mostly. I flew the 25x12 3b in 1 contest with Pefa cans. I didn't like it personally, but later I did find that the case on my 106 was cracked, causing a lean condition. So, I could be tempted to try the 3b again. It sounds like a sewing machine!!!! Hey AB, I see you are out in Lodi, CA?? Do you fly with Garrett??? If so, tell him that Fry says whats up! Smack him around as well!!!

No way do I fly "with" him. I just sit back, watch and enjoy his flying.

He's a ham!! He is a good dude!!! He knows his stuff as well!!! He will not steer you wrong!!!
I see that you have alum gear on your bird as well. Any reason why you strayed from the composite gear?? I pancaked my 32% at 26# once, and the gear didn't break!!! I was amazed!!!! It basically just shoved everything up into the fuse!! Good luck with your 36%!!

Re the al gear: the cf gear had absolutely no spring to it so I chose to go al to save the fuselage during my occasional drop in landings. It works well. I'm an old guy so what can I say.

show871, i have one of these bad boys, and yes a 100cc is just a little shy of power for this airplane. So i put a 3w 140 in this bad boy. Sick power, flys great, and didn't change the wing loading by much. perfect for IMAC. It's my Vega with a V-8 small block. Unlimited vertical. Best of all you can pickup a 140 out there for about 800 bucks. Good luck.
happy landings... |
