Default EF EXTRA 300 - 88" ELECTRIC POWER

I would like to share some photos of the building of an EF Extra 300 88” electric.

The setup is:

Hacker A60 18L with APC 24x12
Master Spin 99 OPTO
Thunder Power 12s 5000 mAh (2 x 6s in series)
Hitec 5955 TG's all around
Weatronic 12-20R as receiver and power supply.

I'm not sure if I can achieve 3kW with this setup, if not the Extra will be under powered for sure...

Does anybody have an idea how will this perform comparing with the gas version with a DA50?

I think you can squeeze a bit more than 3kw out of that set-up. Check out JagerBomb's thread on the 88" EF Yak for an idea of how that power system works on a similar plane.

I hear that an A-60 is plenty of power on the EF yak. You should be fine.

I just posted a few more photos of the building of my Extra.

All I can say is that the quality of the kit is outstanding; I am a fan of Extreme Flight now more than ever!

The Weatronic receiver is also very good, setting up an airplane has never been easier, and you can fine tune all your servos without altering any parameters in your transmitter. I do like it a lot.

Some more photos of the Extra.

Already made the setup of the ESC, it looks OK.

I will make the first static tests this week.

I am using 25º timing in the Hacker A60 18L, does anybody have experience in fine tuning these motors?

My Extra will end at 19 lbs!

I guess this is more than 2 pounds heavier than the gas version... damm lipo's

I save weigth the most I could, but even so came up heavy.

I think I will use 2s 1200 mAh in the receiver, I think it should be enough.

I was testing the servo consumption with an eagle tree eLogger, and the 5 Hitec 5955TG's registed a max. consumption of 3,7A! with no load, who says these 88" doesn't need any power supply?

I think that you'll find this thread to be a great resource for you:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793258

You'll find many people using and discussing (at great length) your exact power system on a similar plane. People say that it's very comparable to DA-50 power.

Or even better, this thread with an EF 88" Extra that also weighs 19#

I wouldn't worry about the weight, so long as you have the power to pull it. Mine flys dandy at 19#

I have no power supply, just a lipo and a regulator, but I have Futaba digitals. Never measured the amp draw.

I maiden this Electric Extra last week!

I can pull 3kW out of the hacker A60 18L but even so, the extra is underpowered at 19 lbs

I could read the following figures after one flight:

Max Amps: 74
Max. Temp. 77ºC

The motor turns a APC 24x12 at 5800 rpm.

The plane flies well but the power it's just not enough for 3D, I mean you can hover it and torque roll but you only have some more 10-20% of power to climb in the end, it pulls out of a hover very very slowly and not vertical.

So, the dilemma is over, this setup is a no go!!

The plane is really underpowered and absolutely not fun for 3D..

And with an Hacker A80 it should end too heavy, I don't see a good solution for a 50cc

let's get back to the DA50..

I've got one of these ready to maiden. I have a A60-16L with a 24x12 APC.

Static tests I got over 4000 watts. I was pulling 100 amps and 42V at WOT with 2 6s 5000 mah 20C lipos. HS!

Mine came in at 18.5 lbs with 20c zippy flightmax lipos.

be careful because the A60 cannot handle 100 Amps.

Mine with 74 Amps gets so hot that you can't touch it after just one flight (almost 80ºC).

4000W is too much for the Hacker...

Folgado, I just saw the EF 'company' plane fly almost the same setup as mine and it looked really good. I think they were using an A60-18L. Plenty of power, good flight times. I'm using a 16L so I will be careful with the throttle or maybe prop down a notch.

Have you got adequate air flow? From your pics I don't see where the air escapes.

What I did was modify the pipe tunnel so that the air can come in there and then back up through the batteries and then air back out at the end of the tunnel. Also, you could add ducts at side of motor cage to get more air to the motor. What I remember is the theory that the large spinner deflects a lot of air *around* the motor. And adding the side ducts gets that air back to the motor.

Folgado,

What esc are you running? What battery packs are you running as well? If you have a Spin 99 or CC 110HV paired up with any solid 20C-30C 12s 5000mah packs that should provide more than enough power on your setup.

If your Hacker is getting that hot you might need to look into building some cowl cheek cooling scoops to redirect the air over the motor. These Hacker motors are extremely durable and rugged and I have no problem/issues pulling 3500-3800W on them. To me the perfect prop is a 24 x 12 or a 25 x 12.5 prop (on an 18L). I have run this setup in my 3DHS 87" SHP for almost 200 flights and have never had any issues.
