Default TMP Katana 70 vs Accel Hobby Katana 70

Starting a seperate thread so I don't junk up Analog boy's thread.

I was on Ebay and found you can get the Accel .70 Katana's for around $75 shipped. Did some research to find out the differences between these and the TMP version that OMP sells now.

The biggest difference I've found is the wing mounting method, which has been improved on the TMP version, this helps to contribute to the strength of the airframe.

With that said, with a couple of very easy mods this Accel version can be just as strong. The main thing people reccomend is to Epoxy the wing to the fuse instead of making it removeable. Also, by stripping off the bottom of the covering from the fuse and running a length of hardwood down the bottom will really strengthen things up.

So for 75 bucks, I ordered one and will modify as reccomended. Then I'll proceed to really beat the thing up to see how it handles it.

thanks for starting a new thread man. I have looked at the accels before. They seem to be an inferior design but for that kinda price a few mods are no big deal. I love that 70 so much i looked into the 40 off of ebay. Only problem is i am here in Canada. I emailed them too see if it could be shipped but they have not gotten back to me. What are you planning for power on that JeeUm. I had the 91 surpass on there for balance cuz of those heavy skis but have switched to a 91fx. HUGE difference in performance. I didnt think i could love it more. But here i am and i am LOVING it. Good luck with your accel i think it will fly just as good as the Tmpro version. Aslong as it doesnt fall apart in the air. cheers

I'm going to use a .91 chinese OS knock off two stroke. Had it in a OMP 65" yak and proved to be plenty of power. If I can get it for $75 and it last just a few flights I'll be perfectley happy. I've never owned a profile that lasted more then 20 flights anyway. I tend to be a little rough on them.LOL

Be careful with that ebay version. A guy a fly with had one that was a real piece of junk. This was about a year ago, so I really hope yours is better. The fuselage was hollow where the landing gear bolted on, the wood on the motor mount split on the third flight (motor fell off when the starter was engaged), & then the fuse broke in half on the fourth or fifth flight. They stripped it down, added some light ply to the sides & some reiforcement between the fuse sides and got another month or two out of it, but for the $75.00 he paid for it, he was not happy.

On a brighter note, I got the .40 size one about two years ago and it's my favorite plane. Guess I got lucky.

Good luck,

Jay

I have had all the versions the accel and tmpro, the tmpro version is different, the airfoil is different, and the wing span is 62" vs 59", also the fuse is 100% stronger, and so is the wing!, also the hardware is much better.

DON'T buy the Accel ebay version, a friend here had that one, and it fell apart on the air! doing nothing stressfull, just doing a normal loop, and wing broke in 2!!! don't risk your equipment by buying a cheap plane!, if you really want to fly the katana 70, get the tmpro version, its much better!

If you get one off E-bay then I'd suggest stripping the covering off the bottom at least to where the aileron servo mounts. Also take out a section of the sheeting. Make sure it's got shear webs at least 1/2 way out and a spar doubler in the center. That helped my wing survive some blenders. I also added additional sheeting to the fuse to stiffen that up. Mine lasted for a while, but I kept an eye on it and in the end kept it low after it developed a vibreation which ended up being a crack inthe fuse...broke in 2 on a landing (soft landing). I agree with Daniel and don't like risking equipment for a cheap airframe. However, if modified it can hold up for a while ... just keep watch on it.

What about the Accel version from their site, not E-bay?
