Default Anyone flying the Aeroworks 35cc Extra 300 QB?

I am trying to find out more info on this thing. I love the scheme. I would like to know what the AUW people are getting with them and what motor. Also would like to know if the wing area they have listed is correct. In their video they used a Brillelli 46gt and it seems to have good power but I wouldn't mind putting a DL 50 into one, I think the DL is the same weight or lighter then the 46GT. I have posted a couple times on the RCU support forums and even emailed them and haven't had any response except for the email they told me they didn't know the information and told me to click the support link on their website which goes right to the rcu forums.

I would love to go with a full 50cc plane but I am limited with our vehicles. Mine is an old prelude but the back seats fold down to allow access to the trunk so it may fit and the wife's car is a 4 door honda accord which I think this thing would fit in pretty easy but I don't think a 84" + WS is going to fit..

I am in the process of assembling one. I am using a DL50 and it appears that the balance will come out about right with the rudder set up as pull-pull and installed in the radio compartment. To use the DL50 you will have to either cut down the firewall box or use 2'" standoffs and enlarge the hole in the firewall for the carburetor. I chose to cut the hole in the firewall and I think it will work out OK.
The ony problem I am having is the rudder servo(digital, set up as pull-pull) oscillates badly when I bang the control stick around and then go to neutral. It will sit and oscillate until another input is given.

This is a high quality ARF!

Hope this helps.

What servo are you using for the pull pull? I know if the cables are too tight it can make the servo have a hard time centering. Would you happen to be able to get a weight of the kit, AUW preferably. Does it seem like it has 1200 sq in of wing area? I can't wait to hear a flight report from ya. I would like to know if it flies light with the DL. Thanks for your info.

I have mounted the DL50 on the 35cc AeroWorks Extra and I was wrong about the balance. I had to add 10 oz. of lead to the firewall to get the recommended starting balance point. So, to me this means any lighter engine would just take more lead. I have 2 JR 8411's in the tail at ~2 oz. apiece and the other servos mounted as specified. I have the receiver battery mounted as far forward as possible in the tank compartment and the ignition battery on the side of the firewall. The only way to make the tail lighter would be a carbon fiber tailwheel assembly. I haven't weighed the overall yet.

I was going to maiden it this weekend, but couldn't get the engine running. I called DLUSA and they said it sounded like a bad Hall Effect sensor and one is in the mail.

One other item of note is the length of the prop bolts. If you are going to use a Vess prop and a spinner with the DL50 you will need longer bolts. I finally found some M5 x 50 at a specialty hardware store.

Hope this info helps,

Dave

I hate it when someone says the haven't weighed the plane so I weighed it. Used a didgital bathroom scale(weighs in .5# increments). Stood on the scale(got the shock of my life) Then held the aircraft and stood on the scale. Weighs 14#.

Dave,
Thats awesome to hear. I have my DL on the way. I have been fighting myself on what plane to get. I really hate to go and get a full 85" + wingspan to find out I can't haul it. I know I can get away with a 78". They did their test with a brillelli 46gt and it is only maybe 2-3 oz lighter then the DL. I can't wait to hear about your maiden. I wanna know how it feels as far as wingloading. Man without 10 oz of lead added under the hood that thing is at 13lbs.

Well at 1200 sq wing area and at 14lbs I get 26.88 oz wing load and at 13.6 lbs I get 25.92 oz wingload. Is there a place in the back of the fuse to mount the rudder servo?

I ended up going with the TOC Extreme Yak from troy built. I would still like to hear how you make out with the extra. Especially how it flys.

I'm flying this setup (well, a DA, but close enough) and it is excellent. 14 lbs on the nose yields a cubic loading of 9.3, which is basically in line with many of the larger 50cc airplanes but with a much higher thrust to weight.

I have mine with an Evolution 45cc, weighed in at 14 Lbs. untill I had to add 16oz. to the nose to get it balanced. Finally got the engine sorted out and was pleased with the performance. The kit did have some short comings, but over good quality.

There's gotta be a way to get it to CG without all that weight. I don't think Stoops needed any lead. The only time I add lead is to the tail of my IMAC birds for 3D/freestyle. If you have to add lead to the front end, you should make a bracket that extends out to the front end of the cowl and put the weight there - the longer the lever arm, the less weight needed.
I'll bet that most people that are adding dead weight, and only as far forward as the firewall also still have their batteries somewhere behind the firewall instead of in front of it.
I just finished their 35% 260 and it was so noseheavy, even with the rx batteries at the back of the hatch, that I would have needed to add 8+ ounces of lead to the tail to get it to balance. But, since weight is ALWAYS an important factor, I made some 30" battery leads and mounted both batteries 30" behind the cockpit. It was still noseheavy so I removed the ign. battery from the engine box and put it at the back of the cockpit for a 3D CG. If I want precision, I just put the battery back up front. I would way rather do this than add dead weight
Was it worth it? You bet - kept the plane down to 25-3/4 pounds when most are coming in at 27+...

Nope. No added weight, and I am slightly nose heavy with a DA on it using stock battery locations. Not sure where the difference is, but mine built up right on CG using the DA and a Pitts.

I saw a video somewhere it looked like it flew like a brick. If my memory serves me correct it got the gear knocked out on the landing.

If you're going to drop that, you oughta have a link. At 14 lbs, it has a cubic loading of 9.3 - hardly a brick.
