Default 73" QQ Yak 54 & 26cc

Hey gang,
I am still debating on what gasser to get. I would love to get a 50cc size but transportation wise I think it may be out of the question. So with the 73" Yak size wise would be perfect and I only want gas, so please don't mention any nitro motors. I really like the evo 26cc but in QQ's video it doesn't have the greatest pullout from hover. I have also seen it mentioned somewhere that they have 50 flights on the setup and it has gotten better but nothing else mentioned. Can anyone provide any more info as to how it is doing or maybe even a video showing how it is doing with the pullout. I know the evo's do alot better on a tuned pipe but from what I have read the 73" doesn't have a cannister tunnel. The other big plus is that QQ's shop is only about 200 mile away from me.

With running a gas motor in that size, the airplane will be a bit heavier, affecting its flight performance a little bit. As far as how the 73" is currently doing with the 26cc, I dont know, but you may want to increase the size of the motor a bit to 30cc or close to. It has okay pull out with the 26cc, but if you are learning 3D, and/or flying precision, you may want a little bit of a bigger motor.

Thanks for the reply. What 30cc would be a good choice? I know the evo 35cc wouldn't be a good choice because it weighs just as much as the 45. I know everyone says brillelli is good but I sent them an email over two days ago and haven't gotten a response and I know it takes some time to get a motor from them. I'm not ruling them out completely but I would probably rather go with something else.

You might want to check out the ZDZ 40RE F3A. At less than 3lbs with ignition, may be worth a look to see if it would work out. Alot more power and about the same weight.

I dont know a whole lot about the smaller gas stuff, so Im not sure what to tell you for that. Obviously you dont want something crazy big, maybe 35cc max, otherwise the plane will be a bit heavier than it really should, and the flying capabilities will suffer. If you wanted a good setup with glow (which you dont, but this would probably be the best choice) go with the Saito 180, or similar sized motor.

Someone at my field had the QQ 73 with the EVO 26cc...flew horrible. Just could never get it right. I think the weight was too much with not enough power. I had the extreme flight with the Brillelli 36cc on it (reason he tried going to gas) however, my setup rocked!!!

I think for that size plane it is right on the line of crossing between gas and glow and you have to be very cognisent of your weight distribution to not kill your wing loading. Plus the gas engines idle at a lower RPM, landing was tougher with his set-up because he had to keep the power on because of the higher wing loading. and the Evo 26 just did not have the power for that plane.

The brillelli pulled my yak around effortlessly. I highly recommend Scotts engines. Notice I said "had" the yak. I was having so much fun with it one day, after a long flight (did not realize how long I had been flying) I tried to hover with no gas...it does not work!!!!

Oh well...

Hope this helps
Mark

The ZDZ 40 F3A is going to be my choice . On a pipe even. Carbon, to keep the weight down. I need the 73" and 102" still, but already have plans for them.

I have personal experience with the evolution 26 hovering a 12.3 pound Tiger 120 with no problem! And this was on the second tank of fuel! The key to put a pipe on it. We put the 'tuned silencer' that horizon sells for it on it and a 16X8 apc. I think the QQ comes in at less than 12 pounds with this engine so I think it would be fine. The key would be to use an EXTREMELY light battery system, like a single 1100 a123 on the rx and a 1320 lipo on ignition, and a smaller tank than what is supplied - you only need about 10 ounces.

I have had a QQ 73" which I fitted a Roto 25 with a JMB 60/60/270 can inside the fuselage with a Menz 18 x 6 prop which gave excelent performance and was not to heavy for a good 3D performance, have a look at the short video of my yak prop hanging and pulling out on this combo.

I have also seen another 73" Yak fitted with a ZDZ standard 40 with a JMB wrap round pitts silencer on a ZDZ 20 x 8 prop, I think the ZDZ 40F3A engine with a compact silencer would also be a very good combo for this model

I really like the looks of the roto motors but there are no distributors in the US except for rcshowcase and they only have the 120 or 140 can't remember.

Is there any video of a 73" flying and using a ZDZ 40 F3A?

I haven't been able to find any videos of someone flying it at all. I would PM Dick Hansen. He uses the ZDZ line and what info I have been able to find is from him on the performance, pipes, and props.

I read in a forum that you can't install a external switch or fuel dot on the 69" QQ Yak, because it has foam construction? Is this the same with the 73"?

I seen the 73" is on sale, and its very tempting. Anyone know the weight difference of the AW 72" and the QQ 73" yaks?

There is a guy who has a 73" QQ Yak at my field. I fly at Sun Valley Fliers in Phoenix, AZ. He had a Fuji 43 on it and it was completely unlimited. It would go vertical as far as you can see it.

He then installed a 26 cc sized engine (I forget wich one) on th QQ Yak. It now has power that would be equivalent to scale aerobatics. In other words, at full power it runs out of airspeed as it climbs vertical. This just means you have to manage your airspeed correctly for doing hammerheads, loops, and vertical uplines.

I only have about 5 minutes on each engine flying it to test fly and trim it out for him. I would say if you are looking for 3D, pull out of a hover perforamance, get a bigger enigne. The 26cc will fly it but it is limited to scale aerobatics.

Also, the plane flies extremely true and is capable of unlimtied IMAC with the Fuji 43.

I have limited time on the plane but did not notice any bad flight characeristics with either the 26cc engine or the Fuji 43. It always seemed to have a nice light wing loading and tracked straight and true.
