Default AM 33% Yak/ZDZ Super 80 and Can?

Has anyone successfully installed a zdz super 80 and canister in a AM 33% yak? Is there any header that will work without having to fabricate one?

Charles, wish I could help more. I just put one together for a friend using a 3w80xi with their header and cannister. Even that one required me to heat and bend it quite a few times to get it even close to being correct.

Ok thanks, I figured as much. I dont think any zdz header will work, so going with a 3w 80xi CS with a can.

If you want to mount the engine inverted, non of their wrap around headers will work....which is what I was trying. If you were willing to rotate the engine some...it's hard to say what would work. With the SUper 80 will will actually need a raise in the heafer......look in the build thread...I believe I posted some pice with the 0 drop wrap around header. I am selling my can if anyone is interested. I haven't posted it in the swapshop yet...but will tonight. It's a K&S for a 80cc engine....30 mm inlet.

I'm going to be insalling a ZDZ Suoer 80 in mine soon! What standard muffler should I use? I was going to order the header and pipe! Oh well...so much for that bright idea!!

Texx,

Check out the build thread here......The pitts muffler that Rcshowcase sells is a nice unit....but requires hacking a huge hole in the cowl. That's what I decided to use.....I posted pics in the thread. Or OM your email addy....and I'll send you the pics directly. I'm not sure on the dimensions for the side mount muffler that RcShowcase sells, but I think it may be a better fit for this application. I would give them a call and see how big it actually is. My gut feeling is it'll fit better than the wrap around pitts. The canister install is possible.....you'll just need to order the pieces parts and braze then together. I just don't have the time to mess with it right now otherwise I would have pursured it. 3 kids, my boss at work is most likely on his way to jail, that leaves me with a HUGE network upgrade this summer to run by myself. I'm having trouble just trying to get the ARF together. If you any other questions, just ask.....I'll answer what I can.

BTW.....my buddies with the 3W80 and Canister weighs it around 24lbs. The advertised weights on these planes is not even achievable. I'm looking at 22lbs with standard exhaust.

Neo,
Putting a header together is'nt that hard to do ,and doesnt take but about 2-3 hours time,a torch, silver solder and flux.I've done one for my H9 Sukhoi last week with a KS 89 can,3-90* pipes and a coupler.
Heres a link to Mike Tangos site where he gives some info.

Thanks for the information NEO! I'm hoping to find a muffler that will require no cutting of the cowl. Maybe I can modify the muffler to fit.

best -simplist setup is -for me to tilt the engine to 8:00 use a 5" long 3" drop header and JMB80mmdia muffler -which fits in and ends befor the wing tube -
quiet, neat - NO power losses .

thats not a 33% Yak , I know because I stuffed one in. The hole in the Yak is to small for the can. Sharp knife and sme ca it will fit.

correcto-
It is a H9EDGE- -just wanted to show how easily the job can be done -
the pipe/header and engine combo is as smooth and quiet as a sewing machine and there is no peakiness whatsoeve - just smooth steady at any rpm.
I sold this setup to a friend who wanted th combo - I watched him fly it - and noted it was also very easy for him to play the power at any throttle setting -
I just got another 80 n can same setup - going to do it again -

I am working on my AM 33% Yak. I'll use the BMB 70mm XL canister/super ZDZ-80 with 4 inches header, engine mounted inverted. From what i have seen, the canister tunnel is to small for a big 80mm canister (KS or JMB) but 70mm diameter can may work.

If you want to mount the engine at 8 oclock, you'll have to replace the stock firewall by a bigger one but the stock one is fine, if you go with BMB canister. The canister is very very very long.. 16''1/2 long,
