Just starting out your better off geting a blade CX or the Blade CP. The coolest thing about the Blades are... any good LHS is going to have replacement parts. (cause your going to need them) If you have no LHS around? I would have to say Heliproz www.heliproz.com or Rons helipros south www.ronlund.com Both are just as good as the other. Customer service is off the chain. Both of these helis will come with everything you need to get her going and they can be upgraded. Now if you have about a G to drop on a heli you can go with the T-rex 450SE V2. Now this heli is the top dog of the small helis out there. It flys like a 50 size heli. There is a bunch of junk helis on the market today. So just watch what you get. As for the best advice I could give you....... start out with a sim (if you don't have one) This will save you a ton of cash. Most of the guys here will tell yea the same. I hope this helps out a bit. If you have any more ?'s just shoot me a PM.

The blade CP is crap. Consider the blade 400. It is not considered a beginner heli, but it is a true heli with a direct drive tail rotor and heading lock gyro, unlike the CP

Get a good 50 sized heli like the raptor with training gear and go from there. Practice on a sim, or find someone local to help you out.

Even an old Raptor 30 would be a good start. Build a cheap set of training gear and learn to hover. Sims help a lot too.

I learned to fly helis on a Blade CP. Hard to hang on to when you start doing basic aerobatics, IMHO.. I did not have the heading lock gyro, but even accounting for that the tail control sucks, in my admittedly amature opinion.

I just bought one of these, FlyRC had a decent review and the buzz on RunRyder looks good. Have not even opened the box yet but seems like it would be hard to go wrong at this price:

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/honeybeeking2.htm

I also have a raptor .30 that I fly a bit, which feels 1000% better than the blade ever did (obviously) but I cannot fly it in my driveway.

I will say that if you can fly a CP around, a .30 or .50 sized, assuming proper setup, feels totally locked in.

Regards
Bob

Ok here we go....

first off, Helis are not like airplanes in some aspects. In others they are.... Helis unlike an airplane will only fly as good as the equipment that is in them. An airplane there is a lot of fudge factor in there where the airframe will perform almost the same with good gear as opposed to really expensive top shelf gear. A heli you can completely feel the difference between 60 dollar servos, and NIMH power and 100 dollar servos with li-po power. The bottom line here is take a look at what you plan on doing with this.

If your serious, and are feeling that you'll probably pursue the heli road, than I would say purchase the best equipment you can afford. You want to leave yourself room to grow. Nothing worse than forking out a grand, only to be forking out another G to upgrade or purchase a different rig. There are tons of used RTF stuff out there, and unlike airplanes if a heli is crashed and repaired 99% of the time it is as good as the day it came out of the box (if repaired right).

NITRO VS ELECTRONS:

ahh a debate a stirrin' Some people sware by electric, some by nitro. Either way its gonna cost ya. Big nitros are big bucks to run, and repair. Big electrics are big money to get into, and repair/replace should you smack a pack. Also LiPo packs truly are only good for about 1.5 years once you start using them. This is based on how hard we pull on the packs. We're asking these batterys to pull major amps that they can do, but they wear out over time. Replacing a 6S lipo will run you about 280 bucks minimum. A smaller one like TREX size will still run you about 60-75 bucks for a good one perhaps even more. Nitro... fuel and fly. 30-40 bucks a gallon, and deal with mess. Nitros are great for that convinience factor. But .... A case of fuel at a time 120 bucks, over 6 months, and you could be looking at a 1500 dollar a year+ fuel bill. Its almost a wash in my opinion. So you need to look at what/how do I want to run this thing.

Radio channels.... dont skimp on going with a 6. You need to at least go with 7 channels.... Heres why... .higher end helis are running a 7 channel receiver. Throttle, Elev cyclic, Roll Cyclic, Collective, tail rotor, gyro gain, governor. You can get away with running 6, but if you get hooked, again your looking at purchasing more later.

So what do you buy ?

bottom line: PARTS !!! not a matter of if but when. Dont buy something that will crash once, and sit on a shelf waiting for parts. Right now the top sellers for parts are the usual suspects. Thunder tiger, Align, hirobo, and the Horizon line of BLADE helis. all have parts readily available. There are others out there too that have good parts selection, but some not as ready to ship as those names listed.

PARTS PARTS PARTS !! dont forget that !

So, to finish up a little here....

Take a look at what you want to do... Take a look at where your at as far as skills go. Take a ride to a heli field and look at what those guys are flying. They're going to be the ones that will be helping you. Bottom line here is.... buy the highest quality you can afford to... if you dont, you are guaranteed to be dissapointed.

Get a Sim!!!

Yes, a 50 size heli and a good quality 7 channel radio.

Seek help from local heli pilots, do not go it alone.
