I was fortunate enough to be in London last weekend during the qualifying rounds on Saturday. My fathers birthday is this month so I took him and we splurged for the High Fliers Club seating so we could see the entire race course. The nonstop parade of Red Bull girls bringing us adult beverages and food was also a nice perk. The first passes the pilots made almost everyone of them took out part of a pylon. But when it came time to qualify, most of them were spot on. I have been converting the video and thought I would share the helicopter routine, it was freakin' awesome.

Too cool. I had no idea a full scale heli could do such things.

I figure it would be fair to say there is no dirt, stones or loose rubbish on the floor in that heli.

I also got to see this last year in New Braunfels Texas, right along with Kirby Chambliss doing freestyle. We flew the noon time demo for R/C and that was the first time I ever got to see a full scale edge up close, I couldnt belive how small they actually are. Jim was there too and that was just truly amazing someone can do those things w/o blacking out. That plane is also very small, I'm 6'4" and I just dont see how Jim fit in that thing, or Kirby.

I'm impressed with how little vertical there was in that performance! At least from that angle it appears that the transition from tumbling/ upside down etc to upright takes very little altitude! Less than I would have guessed for sure.

I fly Apache Helicopters for a living, and can say without hesitation, that this pilot will undoubtedly die in this machine, this is like smoking cigarettes, you know it's stupid and it's going to kill you, you just don't know when. Don't get me wrong, we push our 64s pretty hard, but there is a point where things just become stupid, this guy is well beyond that point!
Just my opinion. It's impressive and fun to watch, but I pitty the folks who are in the crowd watching when this thing finally comes apart (and it will!) |

Wow Apache, Buzz Kill ! :-)
I think every show pilot, whether fixed or rotary wing knows there are inherent risks involved. Keep in mind, just as the majority of the show planes are purpose built, so is this chopper. Certainly no disrespect intended but IMO comparing the BO 105 to an Apache is like comparing a Hummer H2 to a Mini Cooper ! http://www.redbullusa.com/chuckaaron...204-62961151.0

I did not intend to take anything away from this pilot or his ability, I'm sure that he is well aware of the danger; I too used to fly full scale competition aerobatics locally (Super Decathelon), and am well aware of the risks. Every man has his price, and obviously this guy is willing to risk his life for some small degree of fame, we all do so to some degree, what this guy is doing is far more dangerous than what Kirby Chambliss or Sean Tucker do, simply because he does it in a helicopter. Even this "purpose built" BO 105 has limitations, and soon enough we will all see what they are, probably in a public forum; he won't be the first to push a helicopter beyond it's limitations, but will likely be the most memorable. cemetaries are full of stupid helicopter pilots who ignored reason. |

"Certainly no one would be dumb enough to publicly declare that the BO105 is in any way more capable than the Apache! "
Hmmm Arrogance,, errrrrr ignorance is bliss I guess.. "Even this "purpose built" BO 105 has limitations, and soon enough we will all see what they are, probably in a public forum; he won't be the first to push a helicopter beyond it's limitations, but will likely be the most memorable. cemetaries are full of stupid helicopter pilots who ignored reason. I agree, ignorance is bliss, and those ignorant people who have never flown a helicopter are certainly in no way qualified to comment on the capabilities of any particular model; having flown both the AH64A and the BO105, I am fully qualified to make an educated comparison.
The BO105 is a very capable aircraft when it comes to utility missions (although it doesn't compete with the Blackhawk) with regard to performance it is not even in the same league as the 64, probably fits in somewhere between the Bell 407 and the UH60. |
