Default BME 150

I ran BME's new 150 for the first time this evening. It ran so smooth and solid. It would not burble or change sounds at all through any attitude of flight. It flew my 42% Dalton Extra 260 quite well. This is the first one Tom and Andy have built. I could not believe how easy it was to handle.

The plane lost at least 2.5 pounds over the DA on cans, I am running standard mufflers on the BME. I am going to weigh the Dalton now to see where we are at. This engine weighs a hair under 6 pounds bare and under 7 with mufflers and ignition. It is a very compact motor so it is moved out further than the DA. After adding a wood spacer and moving the receiver batteries about a foot forward my cG was just about the same as before. I am pretty sure the Dalton is sub 35 pounds now. I think this will be THE motor for large 35% to 37% planes, like the new Extreme Flight 110" Yak or Comp Arf MX-2.

No camera but did tach it. Tached 5600 with a Mejzlik 30x12 on a very tight never run engine. My well broken in DA was in the 6000-6100 range so I expect this to be in the ballpark, maybe 200 less once broken in. I feel the weight savings will make up for that. Also, some playing with exhaust will be in order. The mufflers I am running are considerably smaller thann stock DA mufflers so I may be restricting things there a little. If anyone has some greves pipes they want to loan me for testing that would be cool.

This engine is not intended for a 40 pound 40%er. It is for the small/light 40%er or big/heavy 35%er. This is also a great option for the high altitude guys and 35% planes. Also, something like the GP 38% Extra would be a good option.

The few guys that were at the field could not believe how it sounded and how it pulled that big plane. The engine looks kind of silly small on the front of the Dalton. I can't emphasize enough how well this engine runs.

I hope to get a couple of gallons through it this week and then will fly it in a contest this weekend. We should be able to get some video of the 150 and the 58 this weekend.

Sorry, I didn't have the 58 out this weekend with the tach. I will get some numbers this weekend.

Is this a good motor for a Carden? Say one built to be light?

How light are your thinking? Mine was good on my 35lb Dalton. Tom at BME is working on some tweeks to get some more power out of it. I am in the process of recovering/lightening the Dalton and putting Greves Pipes on it. My hope is Sub 36lbs with the pipes. It will be a while before I get to run the new motor on pipes. This is my winter project.

I am not sure about that light. I am thinking around 36lbs should be feasible. The plane was built and equipped with a 3W150 and had an awful lot of weight in it to balance correctly. I wont need pipes or anything as the field I will be flying at does not have any noise restrictions. Mainly will need reliable power for 3D flying and extended hovering.

I can't answer your question at this time as i don't know what the new motor is going to do. The one I had would be good at 36lbs but not blast out of a hover. One thing nice about this motor is that it has BIG cooling fins so it will be great for 3D. When you say it took a lot of weight to balance I hope you mean in the tail. This motor weighs 6 pounds.

5600 RPM is really not bad. I don't thing a DA 150 is benchmarked anywhere near 6k with that prop on stock muffs - more like 5700-5800. Heck, I am only getting around 6k with a 32X10 on pipes.
The real question will be how well does the engine accelerated under a load, like out of a hover? An eagletree telemetry system would be needed to really find out, though...

Good idea. I don't have an Eagle Tree but have acces to one. I never ran my DA on mufflers so I could only compare it too my DA on MTW cans. I did only IMAC when I was running the engine.

New motors - I like my BME 50, but would love to have a 58 to play with. I hadn't heard of the 150 till your thread here. Does BME have a 75cc that they paired for the 150? Or is this new components all the way around?

Crazy thought here - has anyone taken 5 of the 50cc and made a way cool 5 cylinder 250cc radial? That could be awesome in Hemple's Yak!

I think this engine would be great on a GP 38% Extra.
