Hi Guys I have read alot of posts on how to balance a prop and most say you sand the back of the prop of the heavy blade on the thick part, Does this mean where the prop attaches to the center hub of the prop as it makes no sence to sand any part of the prop itself as it would affect the pitch. If there is a video of prop balancing somewhere on the net please leave a link thanks.

Try spraying a little clear polyurethane on the back of the light blade.... until balanced....

Sand the back of the blade near the tip. Not at the hub. Changes in weight near the tip of the blade will affect the prop balance more (so you'll be able to balance the prop while removing less material).
The amount of material you'll need to sand will be too insignificant to change the pitch of the prop. There's a good video of prop balancing (giant scale props anyways) here: http://www.downonthedeck.com/videos_instruction.htm The video advocates adding clear paint to the light blade though. For most smaller props though, sanding works just as well (so long as your prop is close to start with). Tom |

I always spray the back side with clear. Never sand a carbon prop if that is what you have.

I always do one of two things. I eather sand a little on the back side of the heavy sides tip with a very fine sandpaper. like said before the father out you sand the less it will take to make a difference. and or I tape off about 1/2 inch on the light side both front and back and spray a few light coats of a red or white paint. this does two things, it helps add a litttle weight to the light side and it adds a color to the tip and actualy make it easy to see were the tip of the prop is while its running. i use the paint on all my smaller props because a person is more likely to get into a smaller prop while adjusting the carb but i have seen people working on a larger gas planes get to close and get nicked by the tip of the prop.
its all about paying attention but things happen and every little bit to make the prop more visable while running helps. i have also found that the color tips helps a tach read more correctly. |

The bolly prop book says to never sand the back of your prop. Always sand or paint the front.
They go into good detail as to why...... |

on glow propellers i usually sand the back and check the balance again and again. on Gass, i just apply a bit of clear coat of great planes finish and it works perfect. To balance to hub just a bit of Velcro and add CA to get perfect balance in both.
