Thanks. I got bored one day, and made a Yak-54ish canopy.

Lol, actually, on the second flight, I deadsticked [clunk line fell off] in the grass and flipped it on it's top. No damage, but he canopy had a small dent, so I put those stripes on it to keep people's attention off the dent...

Finally finished up last night and flew her today for a couple of flights...so now "Old Faithful" is back up and putting a smile on my face again...

The gear is from GraphTech but not really sure on the model...tag had come off and was missing from the package at my LHS. Asked how much they wanted and they said $50 so I couldn't pass on the deal. Was new in the unopened bag. Nearest I could tell by comparing to the other in stock that were marked it was for a 35 or 40% Carden Extra...price was $130 so I got a STEAL !!!

Sorry pics are from my phone right before take-off...

don't really understand how these threads/forums work, but would appreciate some opinions, assembly/setup hints and any other comments on this plane with:
DLE55/HS5645MGs/DX7
This is my first GS, am waiting for Tower to ship the plane. I am actually a pattern flyer from 25 years ago getting reimmersed in the hobby, 3D type stuff doesn't really appeal to me, but just love the aerobatic stuff in a traditional sort of way.
Any comments and/or suggestions much appreciated!

Thanks

With the DLE55 keep everything as far back as you can. I built a battery tray so I could put my batteries in the rear part of the fuselage so I would have to put less tail weight in it. With the DLE55 it tends to be slightly nose heavy. If you have to add any lead to the tail just take out one of the servos under the stab and glue it to the bottom of the stab inside the fuselage. I also re-enforced the fusesides where the stab mounts as well as epoxying in tri stock to beef up the gear mount.

really? Have the engine in hand and it is remarkably light compared to those big ole Zs, Quadra, USs that I remember. Was worried already about the gear - the quality/value of these 'new' ARFs is generally well past my building abilities anymore, but one of the recurring problems I have with my other planes is tiny landing gear blocks getting 'twisted' out of the plane with even a slightly botched landing.
thanks for the tips!!!

It is not that it is "that" heavy. Remember this plane is also designed for glow which is much lighter. If you keep everything towards the rear of the radio compartment you will only need to add 1 or 2 ounce of lead to the tail.

have a 6v 4200 mah ordered for the plane and a 1450 mah 4 cell for the ignition as per GPs recommendations. the big pack would seem easily located as you suggest - the ignition pack a bit more difficult.

since you apparently have worked with the same plane/engine as I am planning - what prop have you found best? Have a 22x10 for break-in, don't know what is going to work best for general aerobatic/sport flying (as opposed to 3D)

I used to run a Xoar 22x8 but found I like to run the 23x8 better. I left the ign battery up front witht he igntion.

I have a DLE 55 in mine, with a 3600Nimh 6.0V Rx and 1450 Nimn 4.8V ign pack, both located at the very back of the canopy/wing opening. I still added about 2oz of lead to the tail, and she flies inverted with just a breath of down elevator. Could probably move the CG back a little more, but I like the way it flies now.

Tower just started shipping these again. Just received mine, UPS did not manage to hurt anything, despite a puncture wound or two in the box. Am actually pretty impressed with it, the quality of the covering job much better than in a GP Skybolt I just finished. Quality of the woods and construction seem pretty good as well, although I will do my usual squirts of CA at all the bulkheads I can get do, some triangle stock in back of the firewall, and, of course, some landing gear block reinforcement. I figure that even if the plane comes in at something over 16 lbs. it will still be a rocket ship with the DLE55 - not looking to hang it on its prop though, unlimited verticals/really really big loops-Cubans- hammerheads etc are what floats my boat
Jbrown - really like the blue tint canopy you did as well - may I ask how you did it?

I don't know about him, but I have always used Rit dye mixed with hot water. Soak the canopy in the mixture until you get the depth of tint you desire.
