Default Corona 2.4GHz RC system, a first-look

Well I finally got my hands on one of the much-awaited Corona 2.4GHz spread spectrum module-based RC systems today.

These look very similar in concept and implementation (on paper) to the Futaba FASST so I was hoping that (at under US$60 for transmitter module and receiver) they'd sit at a pretty hard-to-beat point on the bang-per-buck graph.

Unfortunately, my unit was faulty straight out of the box.

Corona-RC's response was (to paraphrase) "Oh, it must have been one of the first run, they're all buggered, just waste more money sending it back to the dealer, he'll send it back to us, we'll take a look and if we feel like it we'll send a replacement to him and he'll send it to you".

That's very, very poor service.

If they know there is still bad product on dealers' shelves, why aren't they recalling them rather than allowing unsuspecting customers to waste money on them, only to have to then pay return postage and endure an uncertain wait for replacement?

I've also heard from someone who's been lucky enough to get one that *did* work, he says it's not very good. Servo resolution is poor and servo movement is jerky (I don't know if he's going to fly it or not). Others are already talking about canceling their orders.

It would appear that the only product Corona has made that works properly and is worth buying are their original crystal-controlled FM receivers. Both the single and dual-conversion versions of this receiver offer excellent value for money, outperforming the "big name" equivalents in almost every respect.

However, since then their digital servos have been a disaster, their V1 synthesized FM receivers have been unusable due to firmware issues and the V2 synth receivers appear to either not work at all or fail in use. And now their 2.4GHz system looks to be a lemon too (although I can't confirm that unless I can find one that works).

So, until evidence to the contrary appears -- bad product, bad company attitude to the market, avoid, avoid.

But I'll keep everyone informed as to the continuing dialog with Corona-RC and if I can finally get a working unit.

And that's why (wearing my RCModelReviews.com hat) I try to find the lemons so that others don't have to waste their money.
