Default 2007 Lanier Yak - DA 85 or DA 100??

I just came across a great deal on one of these now discontinued Lanier Yaks from 2007... 94" wingspan - 1727 sq. inches and 90" long. The box calls for an 80cc?? but at our altitude 3500 feet above sea level I am leaning towards the DA 100. Anybody out there with one of these beasts? What's your setup? By the way this is not your father's Lanier. It is nice and light (very much unlike my old GS Lanier Stinger!)

DA 85 has roughly the same power as the 100, but it's a pound or two lighter.(depends on which version of the 100)

I have the YaK with a BME 102 on it and love it. THE 102 is mounted on a 3/4" spacer from the firewall. I put a single 8711 pull pull on the rudder mounted just behind the wingtube and the plane balances just about right. I think if you put the 100 on the firewall and mounted 2 rudder servos in the tail in the stock location it should balance about right. Also I think the airfame will hold up better to the smoother twin.

People keeping this one light have been seeing 22-24lbs. An 85 would keep this bird very light. I'm thinking no more than 23lbs. Unless you put smoke, nihms, and such. Do people still use nihms? Anyway, Mine is almost finished. I have a BME 102 on the business end, two A123 2300's 2cell from Max-Amps powering an AR9100 DSM2 receiver, and a Fromco 2 cell on the ignition. Also using three matchboxes for ailerons and elevator. I'll post the weight here when I'm done (probably this friday.)

All the info you could ever want about this plane is there. Some really good reading. Also, loose the main and tail gear immediately. The included mains are almost flat when I put my wings on. Everyone that has flown this plane and shared their experience said the plane flies great and straight. I myself would go with the 100cc. You can always toss this in a 35% later on. Some will say the 85 will also pull a 35%, but at 3000+' I wouldn't bother.

I love mine.
I have the DL-100 in it, with smoke system.
Start the CG at the wing tube, DO NOT follow the manual, it still reads like the smaller Lanier Yak.

Here is a triming flight video of mine.

And no need to say anything about a plane restrant, it is at the tail of the plane, I just didn't use it.

Oh, 1st thing to change is the tailwheel, followed closely by the main gear.
Soft aluminum without any spring to it.
It bends easy and stays bent.

So far, I havent heard of anyone using cans. It probably won't be very easy. Good thing is the bottom of the fuse is solid ( no stringers) and should be easy to work with. Unless you have cans and wan't to use what you have, it seems like a lot of trouble for the reward. However, A single can on an 85cc would be stupid sweet.

In deciding whether I should go with the DA 100 or DA 85, an important consideration for me is that I do not 3D (yet) and my main interest is IMAC (Sportsman - Intermediate) level. Therefore rocketing out of a hover is not what I'm looking for with this plane. Does this change anyone's opinion or advice??

I still say go with the 100cc. The added weight will help with stability during your routine. You also want to be able to snap on uplines without loosing a lot of momentum. Now, I'm not sure if the intermediate has snaps on uplines, but if it does, you're golden with the 100cc.

Having typed that, I still believe in looking forward. Since this airframe has no problem with a 100cc engine, and you will eventually go bigger (yes you will) you'll be thankful you already have the engine to grow with. That 85cc on a 35% flying Intermediate to advanced routines will not be the optimum setup.

Lastly, if unlike me, you have the disposable income to outfit two Giants, slap the 85 on the Yak and rock n roll!
