Default Need some help badly

Hello All,

I'm fairly new to giant scale. I have just purchased a used Dave Patrick Extra 330l and I need some help with some questions I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1. I want to put a gas engine in this plane. I just dont know what to put. I'm not really into 3d. So I need an engine that will be good for aerobatics and maybe a litte 3d once I learn how to do it. What would be a good size gas motor to put in this airplane? The Dave Patrick website says a moki 1.8 glow is too much. And the guy at the hobby shop said anywhere from a g38 to a 45cc motor. Would that be too much?
2. What type of servo's should i use? Some one told me I needed 170oz torque on 6 volts.
3. I found recomended throws on this airplane but not the cg range. Could someone help with the cg?
I would really apreciate any help you could give me. I've tried 2 or 3 other sites and have not gotten alot of help. Thanks in advance.

First off Welcome to FG. I had a DP Edge so hopefully this will help some I flew mine first with a moki 210....power was adequate at best, but flew well. I then later put a ZDZ 50 on it......had tons of power, but flew like a PIG in the truest oink oink since of the word. Oh and mine was heavy so try and do every thing you can to keep it light (even with a light engine). As far as servos I ran hitec 5645's on the ailerons and elevators and 5955 on rudder.

I fly a DPM Edge right now on a DL 50. Bought a Moki 2.10 for it to start as Dave Patrick was so adamantly against gas on this airframe. I made sure the motor box was glued very well, and it has been perfectly fine with gas. Keep in mind I am used to SEVERLY overpowered planes and don't fly fast downlines and rarely hit WOT unless vertical.

Mine is kind of done in overkill style. 7955's Aileron and Rudder. 5985's on Elevators. In the early days people were blowing the ailerons off this plane due to flutter, poor servo choice, and poor set up. So I put the good stuff there. All servos are in the tail to balance the DL.

Mine is running a single pack of A123's feeding a AR9100 and the ignition. About 3/4 down to the first tail former for a neutral CG. No Spinner, No pants, Xoar 23x8. DA muffler. Just a shade under 14.5 lbs. Flies great if you keep the weight down. Mine is a big baby, but I've seen them loaded up to be tippy rocks.

CG on the Extra is between 5-6". Here is a link. http://www.davepatrickmodels.com/dpm/extra/cg_fix.htm

Good luck.

Mike

You did well getting it to 14.5 mine was 16# (stock as a rock though) with the 210 and only got heavier with the ZDZ

we had the patrick edge and it flew like a bat out of ---- on a brison 2.4!!!! reliable and strong! the 40-50cc gassers are great for these planes. the extra is the same size as the edge we had and would be the same i'm sure. as far as servos go.. the faster the better. i believe we had 5645's in ours and they are a bit slow. the torque is there but the speed is terrible. i would recommend 5925's on the ailerons and the elevator and a 5955 on the rudder...

good luck and
