That's "MISTER" idiot to you!
![]() |
I don't know why I'm doing it (must be the goof in me), but I'm rebuilding an Avistar and turning it into a sportier shadow of itself. I don't want to blow money on it, so I'm building from what I've got right now.
This thing was on it's last legs when I got it, so I stripped the covering from the wing and was prepared to cover it again, but... there's this icky, sticky GOO all over some of the balsa that was exposed (holes in covering). It seems to me that exhaust had gotten into the covering adhesive and dissolved it into a mess that has burrowed deep inside the wood. I've tried a couple of cleaners but nothing has worked so far; any ideas on how to get rid of this junk?! It's ticking me off ![]() I'll post pics when I'm finished ![]() Thanks for any help!

Tried acetone and no luck... it looked like it was working for a little while (as in it cleaned it off the surface), but when I came back to it it was the same

have you tried an iron and a brown paper bag?, that will absorb the oil as it is heated, run the iron over the paper bag, may help may not

Try dusting talcum powder all over the wing and leave it on for a couple days, see if it works.

Another thing that helps a lot (once you've got the "gunk" and/or oil off) is to paint any wood surface with water-based polyurethane.
I had an ARF profile which (after *many* hours) ended up with very oil-soaked wood on the tailplane and elevators. After stripping the old covering (well it fell off actually) I used the paper-towel and hot iron technique to get as much of the oil as I could out of the wood then gave it two coats of polyurethane. Once that dried, the new covering stuck like shirt to a blanket and never came loose again.

K2r spotlifter has always been the old standby for oil soaked balsa. It also worked very well for removing the glue residue off monokote from old bumper stickers that acetone or naphtha would not touch. http://www.k2rbrands.com/products/original.htm

K2R is the best, bar none. Spray it on, then heat the area with a heat gun, then, while still hot, spray on some more K2R. Use acid brush to brush the area off, and/or vacuum.
