Mufflers or Canisters?

Somebody tell my why I should spend the money on canisters for my 100? I'm looking at $400 for a set of cans. What am I getting for my $$$?

Depends what fields you fly at.

I fly at places that tend to require throttle control and to be quiet. The SW region was full of that. Cans were a small investment to continue to fly at any field.

Here in the NW it doesn't appear to be as much of an issue for now, but I prefer the sound now of the cans (or lack of). I don't need my motor to roar as I go by to show off how loud it is.

I flew on straight mufflers for years in 100 cc engines. Never noticed how loud it was; but then again I didn't stay at full throttle for very long. A few years ago I bought my first cannister set up.

I liked the quiet sound (the bark was gone). Plus the engine seemed somewhat smoother.

I recently bought a DA 100 with MTW cans. This is by far the quietest set up I have witnessed in the 100-150 cc class. I have gotten used to the pleasent sound. I can hear the wind flow over the airframe at times.

Now when I go to fun flys and hear the guys running straight mufflers I am shocked to hear how loud and OFFENSIVE the sound is. Don't get me wrong; I LOVE airplane noise, particularly prop rip. But we don't live in a vacuum anymore, and in my opinion there is no excuse to run a straight muffler system these days. I can't help but think there is a certain amount of arrogance involved in running the old muffler set up. If you live and fly on your own 25 acres by all means run straight mufflers. But if you fly at a club field I have to question your judgement.

Personally I will never run straight mufflers again. Let's face it, all they do is move the sound lower by about 6 inches....

I expect a lot of flak from my comments but please remember I used to subscribe to the "the more noise the better" croud.

I hear ya Jim. I'm just having hearburn spending $400 for canister mufflers for my $700 engine.

Benefits include; hearing all the sounds the prop and plane make, much nicer than blat blat blat all day long, tuning the header length will increase power no mater what muffler/cannister/pipe you use, expect 400 to 1000 rpm increase, rear dump canns tend to eject the exhaust oils away from the plane saving the expense of having to buy a steam cleaner to get rid of the goop.
