The reason behind avoiding regular gasoline with alcohol in it, is the carburetor's rubber parts. Most all new Walbros will come with the newer membranes designed for todays gas mixes. An older carb might never ever develope a problem from using todays gas. The problem will develope when trying to re-assemble a carb, the older rubber pump diaphram might swell up and not fit. Walbros carb repair kits all contain parts that are compatible with ethanol today.
As far as octane content goes, I prefere using premium gas. It doesn't seem to increase power but does seem to make the engine run cooler. Which is exactly what it is supposed to do. Now if you are running an engine with compression ratios higher than 10:1, and most high end gas airplane engines will, then to me premium gas is a must. No reason not to run exotic fuels like you mentioned except some claim Av gas will form lead deposits on the spark plug electrode. Typicaly at 200hrs. And the added cost is a factor. |

No claims about it. I've had to clean plugs after running avgas in model engines. You can't hardly get the stuff off the plugs and after about an hour of running time they are covered with the crap. 3W, ZDZ, and MVVS need the higher octane of premium. Most of the others do not and regular unleaded will be fine.
There's no need for 110 octane fuel in our gassers unless you have made some substantial changes in it's internal components. |
