Its been a while now since both companies came out with their new offerings. Has anyone done a side by side comparison test? specifically in the prop turning and vibration department.
I chose these two tests because they seem to be the most often talked about. Real figures only please!

There are three DA 85's at my field and I have a 3w 85. So far the DA turns a 26A Vess at 6500 RPM. The 3w is turning the same prop at ..........6500 RPM. The 3w does however vibrate significantly less. We looked at the cylinder heads side by side and made the following comparisons. The DA has a longer stroke Meaning more torque but less power. The 3W has bigger cooling fins. The DA has three big intake ports The 3W has two big and two small intake ports. The last difference is the Prop washer. 3w is using the bolt pattern for the 150 on the 85. Oh yeah the weight. I believe the 3w is 4 ounces heavier
This is going to be a controversial statement, but the way I see it, the choice is a Ford vs Chevy vs. Dodge.......In other words, get what you like they are virtually the same performance wise. |

Now your talkin.
![]() Only 4oz heavier huh? I was under the impression the 3W was 1 pound heavier like for like. That was my basis for the higher vibration often mentioned when discussing the DA. So if you had the chance to buy the 3W again .......lol.......would you?

PERSONALLY----I think the 3w sounds better and sounds like it is running smoother. Without a doubt it is quieter. Yes I would definately buy it again After posting yesterday we tached the motors again. the DA was up to 6800 and the 3w is at 6650 (3w still breaking in only 15 tanks through it)

Thanks for the info Ih82crash. I did some research myself and found out the 3 dub has 3 main bearings to the DA's two mains which I never knew until yesterday, (hope I got that right). No doubt this would add to the smoother running of the 3w and result in less vibration.
I'm not sure your weights are correct though. Theres a recent post on this forum were the DA is counted at 4lb 7oz inc ignition and 3w claim theirs comes out at 5lb 4oz inc ignition add the battery and switch to both and your still looking at 13 to 16 oz difference. http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...ight-da85.html Your tach readings and prop sizes are very useful and it would be interesting to see what speeds your engine reaches once run in. Any chance of some info on the birds the DA and 3W engines are fitted to which you mentioned in your first post? Its good to see the info between both engines in one place instead of spread over the net.

3W 85 doesn't leak through the head gasket.

Just stating the facts. If I was going to spend such money on a motor, I would like to know if there's something going on with them.
Please let's keep this thread on track.

Blip you may be right I'm not sure on the actual weights. I do know that two of us have 33% SD yaks There is only 8 ounces difference in the planes. Setups are Identical, except the 3w has the rudder servo in the tail. and DA has a Carbon Wing Tube. That is the basis for my weight claim. Either way you would be hard pressed to tell a power difference even when the Density altitude is at 7500'. Take these things to sea level and you would rip the wings off!! Both planes are running pitts style mufflers.

The 3W also doesn't have a problem with the hub that locks up and causes the engine to seize (granted DA has fixed this on later engines). I am sure people want me to log off now too...

Well thanks for your input Ih82crash you did real good there for as long as it lasted. I gained some valuable insight on the two subjects I requested. May as well let the leak and hub department continue polluting the sole purpose of this thread with non relevant info that was never specified in the first post when another post elsewhere covers these two items in more then sufficient depth so as not to add further duplication.

3W and DA are all great engines. I myself have a DA-85 and I like it very much. I have had problem with the head gasket, but when it happen the engine did run bad at all. DA sent me a new gasket and all is well now. I say go with whatever engine you like. Me personally I will have a DA, but thats my opinion.

Wow. you try to help by letting people know of issues with the engine and they complain. Some people are just plain stupid.
