I fly off a sandy stretch and the tips of my 28x10 Menz prop have some nicks due to sand particles. Is there any safety risk in using this prop, which is fairly new? I've heard of CF tip wood props, are these able to resist nicking? Thanks

Run a quick pass of 400g paper over the edge to smooth it out and hit it with some thin ca to reseal. Check carefully for any cracks. If there are any get rid of the prop. Carbon dings as well and costs more to replace. Perhaps place something under the front of the plane for run ups and stuff to prevent some of the prop damage.
There's a point where you don't try to keep working with a dinged prop but the dings here can be dressed to continue use. |

I have a Menz 22-8 and when putting the prop back on a new plane I noticed that the hub and the front face of the prop has what looks like spider cracks in gel coat or maybe clear coat, in it radiating out about half way to the tip. Should I continue using this prop or should I replace it???
There seems to be none on the backside of the prop just the front...

A prop will suck up more loose stuff off the ground the higher the RPMs are, so....don't do run-ups over loose stuff, and feed in the throttle to accelerate slowly if you must take off over it. You'd be amazed at how much less prop micks you'll see be practicing a bit of throttle management over that kind of surface.
Same with full scale stuff too ![]() Earle |
