Side area in the aft region of the fuselage opposes good knife edge qualities. (It tends to fight the rudder and cause the plane to weathervane or align with the flight path)
This plane has the deepest side area at the wing... where it is most effective without being destabilizing in yaw.
What a freakin smart ass!!!

Hey Mithrandir

If I wanted to talk to smart people, I wouldn't be on this site.

I am thinking of purchasing this plane and mounting a Moki 400 radial engine. I am just concerned about the strength of the fire wall and fuse. The 400 puts out allot of torque. With the engine weighing 20lbs I will probably have to shorten the nose a little to get the CG right. Here is a link to a Moki on a Gee Bee R3 and this one .

Bill,
Do you think the airplane will hold up with this engine?

Thanks,
Tony

Holy crap. That big radial makes a fantastic sound. I didn't know Moki made 'em.

We are using 22 AWG twisted Heavy duty servos extensions with Gold contacts and JR ends.
They came from Airwild.

Here we are getting the EQ-10 and Turbo Reg in place, we had to add the servo wire guide tubes

since the Yak did not have them. Once the Wires were ran through the tail and wings we

installed the JR 8711 servos and placed all the servo leads at the Power supply.

After all that work we ran a heat gun over the covering to finish out the day.

Though it is a lot of torque, because it is a radial with more then two cylinders...tere are more power pulses and each power pulse is smaller (Then a two cylinder opposed configuration of the same average torque and HP)... so the shock of the engine is actually less.. the "Peak Shocks" that is...

and you can think of the firewall as not attaching the engine to the airframe, but attaching the airframe to the engine....
So as long as the airplane weight is not hugely different, and the prop is not a lot bigger and not a lot more weight, and the RPM's are not a lot higher, (All these items increase the gyroscopic loads on the firewall which are likely the highest loads other then engine vibration)... the extra few pounds of engine weight are likely not an issue.....

oh.. sorry...

nevermind..

you asked Bill....
