I must admit, the DA 170 idles a ton smoother than its 3W counterpart, and after 3 or 4 gallons, mine is just starting to smooth out a little at idle. I saw 3 of the DA's this weekend (one of them PePatrick's) and they all idled like V8's. Mine did rip the snot out of a 32x10, so now it has a 12 pitch on it. Hopefully if it quits raining this weekend, I can try it out. Folks tell me it may be 10 or more gallons before it smooths out at idle... I hope the plane doesn't vibrate in half first! Hey Phlip... you didn't pick up any strange habits in San Francisco, did you? |

I picked up a new lisp in my voice..so justh...thtop it...I feel very colorful out here. Actually I am at the airport...waiting for the long flight back. I dropped my wallet at fishermans wharf...and just said...what the hell..I didnt need it anyway. I walked into a bar down here..some guy offered to push in my stool. I was confused.
Yes...the 170 purrs like a kitten. After playing hookie on Monday and getting a bunch of flights in...it idled even better than my 150...man...it is nice...I also have a 2nd DA-170 to slap on the Krill Yak...Just got confirmation that it arrived this afternoon...I think DA got it right this time...Or at least the first impression is. |

I went to the field today with my new 32x12 on the bipe.. the weatherman said rain all day, and he was right. The clouds were pretty low, and it was drizzling rain on and off. So... no testing today, but I did go through 5 batteries on the electric Edge 260. I had the whole field to myself, so I had to put something in the air!

Eagle1,
Just watched your start-up vid. Is it me or does that DA-170 sound smoother than my DA-150? It sound like from the vid that there is some power left in the motor. The idle sounds very smooth. It almost sounded like there was some leaning room on the top end - its hard to tell with pipes. But geeze with 5790 right out of the box - man fly that thing!!! Im liking the DA-170! Ronster |

The 170 definately is smoother than the 150. That 5790 will bump up quite a bit after a few flights. My DA-170 was rich from the box, but I have not touched the needles on it yet. I will wait to get 5 gallons of break in through it..then lean it out. Like I said in an earlier post..its seems like the 3rd or 4th flight..the engine really came alive. Every one I have seen runs that smooth...its smooth transition though all throttle positions really gives you a lot more confidence in the motor...even during break in.

I am going to let it warm up a little then head out to the flying field, I am not much of a 3D'er but I'll give it my best shot.

It flew beautifully, not a single blip of trim was need until the second flight, 2 on the down and that was it, I took my hands off the transmitter right after take-off to show the trim was almost perfect,I need to calm down the throws a little all around, i put two flights on her today, the second flight I leaned out the top end about an 1/8 of a turn, that seemed to help the transition from low to high, great, on the second landing on the first flght I didn't hit the tail wheel hard but the plastic mount split causing the tail wheel to smack the rudder, on the first landning on the second flight, my tiller arm pulled the skin off the bottom of the rudder, this thing is way tail heavy on landings, just the way the landing gear are set up, alot of the weight is in the rear when landing, other than that I love my 170, 1/4 throttle slow knife edge wand not an ounce of altittude was lost, I cannot wait to turn everthing down on the next flights and try more 3D goes into hover pretty easy but very pipey, harrriers are a little rocky, just need more stick time on this bird, I still like my 260 better though, great looking plane in the air as I would have exspected.
Video will come I have to edit it. Last edited by eagle1; 11-16-2008 at 05:59 PM. |
