Hey guys here is another thought.
Bill was in the Desert overseas flying UAV's up until 17 days before TUCSON.

I really don't think 17 days is enough time to really work up a proper Freestyle.
SO... why not make it fun.. break up the flying a bit, and demo a product.

I have no problem with that, and I'm sure the 21 other pilots who knew that they now placed one place higher didn't mind either.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/...aerobatics.pdf click on this link and read rule 6.6 and that should answer your question .

I thought Hempel's freestyle was very original. The only other person I've seen hover a cub was Kyle.

Well that is what he said. Yah i sometimes say" that is bad for the hobby", but what i really mean is "that is good for the hobby", but i only say that on opposite day. When i say somthing i pretty much mean it unless im being a bumbleling idiot. But then i still pretty much mean it.

it's funny that i have read the last few posts and everyone keeps saying it's all about pleasing the crowd and having fun.
tas is a premier event and not everyone gets to fly there and while it's great to think of pleasing the onlookers, there is a fair bit of money at the end of the day.
it would really pi ss me off if i had applied to fly freestyle and missed the cut to see someone go out and not give his all in the spirit of what freestyle is all about.

You guys. this is Bill Hemple were talking about. Not some schmuck. Ok. I think it is fair to say that he flew the $#!t out of the cub.

It was in sync with the music.
It was in order with the things judges look for in a freestyle flight.
And how about this, how many 50% J-3 cubs have you seen in the TOC or TAS etc. One(1). 2008 TAS. Consider it history made because you probably wont see it again. Lets not bad mouth one of the best if not the best embassador we have for this hobby. Thats the guy right here that you all are bitchin about. Saying that Bill or somthing he did is or was bad for the hobby is LUDAKRIS. LUDA:Banane20::censored:

Guys,

Fair go, sometimes it makes me wonder how much lithium it would take in the coffee to slow some of you down for a minute or two.

Bills first flight was the full 4 minutes so it scored, the second flight hardly got off the ground before it had some kind of problem and he quit. Not zero but might as well have been.

Was it in the spirit of things, yes of course it was. In fact if this had been the TOC he would have scored more due to the size of the plane, something TOC was always looking for.

The flight (there was really only one was to music, in time and actually very enjoyable to watch. Boring??? is in the eye of the beholder by the way, so is beauty. Each to their own.

There were 21 pilots in freestyle and five were going to be in the money. Now you could actually pretty much pick from about ten guys who those five would be. So if your not in that top ten but you rin for the event and to have a good time why not do something out of the box.

As for holding someone out of a spot to fly well you had to win your way into the shootout, its not a Johhny come lately but it is a who's who of ace freestyle pilots.

I strongly suggest we get off the Billy Hempel subject here and get back to what a great event it was, put on by one of the greatest guys you will ever have the good fortune to meet.

Its an IMAC event like no other, its held in Tucson where the guy wants it held and if your nuts about events start saving a few pennies now so you can come see it next year.

But bashing guys because they flew freestyle in a cub or bitchin because it is not being held in Vegas is just not our style guys.
