I asked Bill what made him think to fly the Cub and he said "I wanted to do something different. There are so many Yaks and Extras I wanted to be different." I don't think anyone knew (including the judges) how a Cub routine would score. Now we know. Last year Jason Noll was disappointed in his placement flying the same routine that we won 2007 XFC with. He had a new routine this year with more 3D and it scored better. There was no guarantee it would score better but he felt he needed to get lower and wilder to have a chance. It appears his hunch proved correct. This year Sascha F. was disappointed with his score. From his perspective he flew well and didn't understand his low placement. My point is there are a lot of variables. There are no absolutes or guarantees. Keeping the same routine is a risk. Changing the routine is a risk. You do your thing and hope for the best.

I was there, and I enjoyed watching Bill fly the club along with everyone else I know who was actually there. As Bill's youngest daughter said at the end of the flight, "Daddy you're funny!". Enough said.

Cub haters... If I remember right Bill was not even entered in the Freestyle until shortly before the event. There are four guys listed in the overall results (24 people) that didn't fly at all. I don't think Billy took someone else's spot and say what you will but even with only one complete routine it still was not last.
Let's take it a step further, one of the prizes was a 50% edge from Bill, I don't think he was in it for the money and definiatly provided more for the contest than anyone could ever say he took away from it.

Yep Kind in a sea of seriousness. Bill is the man. This is not a negitive sport. It is a positive sport. People are negitive. Flying is only negitive when you pull the G's.
Congrat to Mark Leseburg for wining the Freestyle and the invitational. Definatly Bad ass!!!Congrats to all the pilot who made it to the TAS. Good Job. Good to see our international friends there as well. Thanks for coming all the way here guys. We appreciate your hard work.

Guys,
I have finally got home and sorted out the work side of things (that pays the bills) I have 14Gb of raw HDV here and will now start working my way through it. If you wonder what 14Gb of video looks like its 3.5 DVD's of just like being there. 2 hours per DVD so you see what it is. It takes 3 hours per DVD to render this stuff into a viewable format. So without even looking at doing doing titles, sounds, cuts and wipes etc I'm in for way over a day full time glued to my Mac. Now my aim is to upload this in HDV and to do that in a format that has virtually no loss of quality I will be doing it in Quicktime. Windows seriously sucks to make good or great video so guys all you need to do is download Apples FREE QUICKTIME PLAYER and these will work for you. But I will not be converting them to WMV as the result is not worth the huff and puff. Stay looking here as I get them out. I expect one or two a day at best until I get through them all, after all its summer down under and the weathers just great for flying and fishing. |

Kyle,
You dont need to make apologies to anyone mate. Your freestyle was off the hook and there is no calling anyone out on who was great and who was not. Everyone of the freestyles was good. Your a master of precision and grace in your 4 minute free and no one comes close to you, seriously. As you well know but many others dont know the judging criteria for free style is at best a lottery style draw. Let me explain. Unlike judging a sequence where you have a book of rules to judge to and remove points free style is judged on perception. Take the timing to your chosen music as an example. Judge 1 likes your flight and thinks your timing is really good so he scores you a 9. You are one of the early pilots in the list in this case. 20 pilots later judge 1 finds pilot X flying in perfect unison to the music but he has already given you a 9. He knows pilot 3 (you) scored a 9 so he has to mark pilot 20 better. In fact in the 17 pilots the flew between No 3 and No 20 he now really has to go back and arrange the scores so they are marked from the top scoring pilot back. Thats very hard to do if not impossible with a field of 24 pilots. The same goes for all the other criteria being judged. Its all perception. It needs to be scored using the best scoring pilot as the base line then go backwards from there. So if the best scoring pilot flew first yet you did not score him high (this happens because you have no base line to score or criteria witha fixed points value) then your stuck with how the heck to score anyone who flies better in the coming list of pilots. Lets look at the judging criteria. 1. Complete use of the flight envelope utilizing the exploitation of aerodynamic and gyroscopic forces. (20 points) 2. Execution of individual maneuvres. (40 points) 3. Wide variety and versatility of different figures flown on different axes and flight paths (30 points) 4. Pleasing and continuos flow of figures with contrasting periods of dynamic and graceful maneuvres in their best orientation and optimal position. (50 points) 5. Presentation of individual and combinations of figures in their best orientation and optimal position. (40 points) 6. Symmetry of the presentation utilizing the performance zone to maximize the audience and judges perception, reception and veiwing of the program (20 points) Now go sit in the judges chair and mark each and everyone of those as you see it (NOTE I SAID YOU!!!!!) and remember if you mark the first few guys too high there is no room to put a better performer in a higher position or give higher scores later on. I am glad that I dont judge this guys, its a no win situation because its all down to the individuals perception where as pattern or sequences have given values for each manouvre and a pretty stable system to loose points. |

The last years (like this one) when TAS ends, the first videos that I´m looking for, on FG, were the ones from KYLE´s presentations, maybe I´m member of the Kyle´s fan club, maybe I can´t believe the way he flies, but something I´m very sure when I see his videos, KYLE´s flying is closest to the ground like no other and at the same time out of this world.
Like Bill Hempel, they are the ones that transform a great competition (or fly in) in a Super Duper Show. Thanks a lot, and my respect to all the pilots that made all this kind of competition in the dream (at less to be as spectator) to all of us (Not BA pilots) that live very far from up there. Thanks to SleepyC, Kiwi, FG staff that makes us possible to stay dreaming

I saw every Freestyle flown at TAS this year. Not one of the pilots needs to apologise for his flight, that includes you Kyle. You had the crowd on it's feet multiple times during your performance. Jeez guys, get a life!
