Looking at this one for a 91 Surpass.
Basically, I need a small glow plane to take along for something for ME to fly in between training flights for grandson #2. I cannot get his trainer and my gasser Extra in the truck together. I assembled a U-Can-Do 46, but just don't have the heart do anything with it. I want something that at least LOOKS like an airplane... I have read a few threads on the EF 58" Extra, and am wondering about the incidence issues mentioned. These can be easy to fix or totally FUBAR, depending on the cause. I know EF has a rep for top-notch quality, etc., but after all... these things ARE made in Pacific Rim sweat shops. I'm particularly interested in what EF considers necessary to "beef up" this model for glow power... tri-stock, another piece of plywood slapped on the existing firewall, what? Am I reading the specs correctly? It has MINI servos on ailerons and elevator???? I haven't found anything else, which is suitable for a 91 Surpass, that trips my trigger. This one looks very nice. But I'd like some additional info, from actual end-users. . |

I can assure you the factory is FAR from a sweat shop.
The glow conversion kit has a F1 doubler and then parts to box in the entire motor box (with the electric setup...the motor box doesn't use the top and bottom...) . We have found that plenty strong. The motor mount bolts on to the firewall using existing blind nuts.. so no drilling needed (I think we spoke yesterday on the phone...it was Monday after Huckfest..... ..we were all in catch-up mode!)We use Mini servos... HS-225MG.. and they have worked well.. I know many people use standard, but this does require some modifications.... nothing major... just need to enlarge the servo opening.... Curtis

You've never had anyone complain about the wing locator pin holes in the fuselage being slightly "off", causing assymetrical wing incidence?

Yea, I have never heard about any wing incidence issues with EF stuff.
I think this may be an unsubstantiated rumor. And to be honest, if you somehow got a plane with an issue, I know they would take care of you. Could you point out the threads that mentioned the issues, and who posted them? I'd be interested to see that.

Hi friend, perhaps you will find interesting this post, Martin, one of the best pilots in Spain and me, did the EF 58 Extra. He did the glow version, and even not used the conversion kit. I did the electric versión. Both flies beautifully, no incidence issues at all. For the streng, you can dowload the video " Trying to explode a EF extra in flight " and see the streng of the airframe, even a speeds and maneuvers not designed. Wishing to help you. here is the link. http://www.acro3d.com/foro/viewtopic.php?t=3738 Cheers, Manuel.

I understand, too many planes and too few time, anyway I think yo´re going to miss a very fine model, but it´s your decision and money. You´re always wellcome Steve.
Cheers, Manuel.

I don't know how to do "links".
The thread is in this forum, near the bottom of Page 1. I just looked at it again. According to the PM I received after inquiring, it was more than one model, and they fixed the problem themselves. Basically, the same issues I saw on my H9 ShowTime, which I fixed too. But if I have to do all of that, I'd just as soon build a kit... . |
