Guys - I picked up my new airplane therapy last night. It is a CA Models PassPort delux ARC. Thank you so much Marcelo and Luiz for bringing this in for me. This is the perfect therapy cure for my crashed Osmose - RIP. I really appreciate the extra effort the shop made to paint this for me to help get in the air faster after my crash in Bogota.
The CA Guys did a nice surprise and painted it white for me, which means that I can go straight to a little clean up work, and shooting colors. I'm looking to have this in the air in 2-3 weeks and flying at the Tangerine contest in December, one way or another. After waything Marcelo and several others fly the PassPort in Bogota at the South American Open Championships, I'm sure that this ship is one of the finest planes on the market now. It looks to be very stable in wind conditions, and by the feel of the fuselage, should come out under 10.5 lbs similar to the osmose. I'm going to post some pictures as I go along. My plan is to outfit with the YS 170 and Hatori 821/822 header/pipe combination. I'll use Jerry Budd's nose ring and engine mount like I have for some years now. I'll install Futaba 9650's in the elevators, 9151 on the ailerons, and 9156 on the rudder. I'll look to mimic the instalation I did on the Osmose regarding fuselage formers and tank installation. However, the PassPort is a bit bigger, so I think I'll add one additional lighted former to box-in the open bay better. After about 120 flights on the Osmose, it was "tight" like a new plane, so I think the methods proved them selves good enough to me. I'll paint a similar scheme like I did on the Osmose. thanks, Jim

I'm going to follow these wing/stabs scheme, and the fuselage for the most part. However, I'm going to have some color flares of red and blue along to the top part off the turtledeck.
Thanks, Jim

Jim,
Congratulations on the new plane, I have one of these in the garage. It is the Deluxe red version. It originally had a YS170 in it. I will be setting it up as an electric powered plane using the new Neu F3A motor, which should be here in the next week or so. I have heard it is a great flying plane. I am also amazed on how light it is. I will be watching this build thread closely. |

Thanks Don and 1bwanna1. I was quite happy with the Osmose and I hope the PassPort while different, stilll matches the Osmose for low mix numbers and such.
Thanks, Jim

I think Chip was flying the Passport at the nats and was using the NEU motor. It seemed to pull very well.

Yes, there were 3 Neu powered Passports at the NATS this year. They had good results. In fact I think they used the Passport as the test platform to develop the Neu F3A motor. I will be watching Jim build his YS powered one with interest, and compare notes when my EP version is done.

I hate to hear about your incident in Bogota, Jim. Looking forward to this build thread as well!
Also, congratulations on your finish. You did very well, now that I hear about the circumstances you underwent. Which airplane did you fly there? |

Thanks Ryan. Cameron and I shared his only plane, the Marauder, designed by Ken Blackwell. Given the circumstances, his equipment was flown twice as much as anyone elses and it held up GREAT! He has a heart of gold because with only a day an a half of practice together, we made changes to adjust to flying at 8500' elevation and both of us flew the new settings. There is a little more of the story on RCU under the Bogota thread. We were both caught at a time where we each only had one flyable pattern plane and still wanted to go for the experience. I would do the whole thing over again with the same result - it was that much fun!!
Thanks, Jim

I worked about 8 hours on the plane today and made templates for the formers to be. Because the depron foam floor I did a few things different. I made sort of an I-Beam out of each former that touched the depron to enlarge the glueing surface between the former and the foam. The hardest part is done now. One of the pics shows a scrapped togther template, the balsa, then light ply.
Thanks, Jim PS - how does 30% glow fuel react with depron foam? - experiment to follow...

A few more pics of the tank and aft-most wing adjuster former. The fuselage is so big inside I'm not sure if I'll add more support or not. I want to see how it feels after the hysol cures. The formers are swiss-cheesed pretty good, and have some cf strip where needed to keep things stiff.
Thanks, Jim
