Default What happened to this battery?

I'm running a Rimfire 35-30-1450kv, silver series 40A brushless ESC, and a Thunderpower 2100mah lipo 11.1V in a elec yak. After 5 mins of flying lightly, I brought it in because the wind was getting too gusty. When I was turning if off I noticed the lipo was swollen, obviously can't use it again. But why would it cook like that? If I were flying my normal 3D pattern for 10 mins, the plane would have caught on fire. All the connections were good, just a swollen battery. It wasn't hot either, just swollen. Any ideas?

If you hot charged it right before putting it in the air, it could have been still to hot to fly right away,...too many maybe's tho to say for sure. Could be old,...could be new but poorly assembled,...could have dropped or bumped it against something hard and damaged a cell it it with out you knowing it or you could've pi$$ed off an angel! Who knows?! That's why I don't buy expensive batts.

Do you balance your cells?

No I've never balanced the cells, I guess I need to get one of those. I use a Accu-cycle elite which is good for charging lipos, but it doesn't balance them. The batt is maybe a year old, and it's quite possible I dropped it at some point. And I have used it alot, so it had alot of heat cycles going through it. I charged it a few days before so it definitely wasn't hot from charging, which I've never noticed it get warm from charging anyway, I normally keep the charge rate around 400mah and it takes 4 or 5 hours. I like to charge 'em slow.

Nothing wrong with charging slo but not using a balancer is just battery suicide. I'm surprised it lasted this long. Get a blinky or equinox and balance all your batts. I also have an elite but I always use a balancer!(I use the equinox)

Dang I never knew a balancer was that cheap, I'll grab an equinox this weekend.

A Watt meter is a good tool as well. It could of been the wrong prop combo.
