I would just like to share with you guys my latest project. It’s a Byron & Originals 3rd scale Pitts S1. A bit of a blast from the past, but I have taken this old design and added a modern twist. Powered by Towerpro 5330-10T 215Kv Motor on 10 lipo, 100Amp ESC. This aircraft is completely molded in foam and is not like anything made today.

Having been around when the Byron Pitts first came out (when I believe they were actually recommending a geared 90 size glo engine) this looks like a great project and the electric motor should produce a great end product.

What's the finish on the plane......fiberglass or ?

I'm going to finish the Pitts in China Cote. There is no need for glass cloth as I don't need to reinforce or fuel proof the airframe.

That is looking really good! I had the Byron's CAP back in the early 80's and it was 80% injected molded foam. I whimped out on the build and sold it cheap since the largest "common"glow power plant was the Super Tigre 1500 (I think.) Guys were just starting to mess with converted gas weed eater engines. My hobby budget at the time did not lend its self to forging the path of virgin knowledge.

rc technics, Can you post a pic. of your finish scheme? Curious where you plan to go artistically with it.

I miss my old Christen Eagle, your pitts looks Great! I had a Quadra-42S on it and if I had it now a da50 would be perfect!

RC Technics, are you setting this up for 3d, or imac? What components are you using? any estimated finish weights?? any weight reduction taking place ie; coring out the fuse,tail? any extra strength areas needed ie; carbon placement? sorry for all the questions, I'm just curious!

I'm hoping to set the Pitts for 3D use. I will be bevelling the controls to 45º of throw and larger out put arms.

My estimated finish weight with 4,500mAh lipos should to 14.5 to 15.5 pounds.

To lighten the airframe I have replaced the stock wheels and spinner with foam wheels and a fiberglass spinner. I will be cutting lightering holes in the firewall to reduce the weight.

I have added a plug in tail plane for easy storage and transportation.

I don't feel I need to strengthen anything on the airframe.

I will be finishing it in Charlie Hilliard’s Red Devil Colours.

Just curious, where did you find the Pitts? Not many left around anymore, much less still in kit form.

Your right there is not many of these around and it did take some searching to find one. Iron Bay models own the moulds but they have no plans on re kitting it

But my kit, I found local to me, on www.rccanada.ca This is one of three I have found over the past three years. First one found on E bay but I lost the bid , second was someone replying to me after I lost the E bay one, but they wanted $750usd for the kit .

But there is currently one in kit form on RCU for sale.

My dad is working on the same project but his is in the UK. He has had his untouched since 93 and is currently building it.

From my estimates, your setup should be just as light or lighter than a gas setup. your setup will weigh in at approx 2100 grams or 4.6 lbs ready to fly. just a da50 w/standoffs os 3.13lbs. add to that a fuel tank and fuel, throttle servo, muffler or can and I thing you may have an edge here. these planes NEED to be light to fly decent. I like the economical value of your setup and am intrested to see how well it works for you. do you plan on making duct work or venting for the massive speed controller?? also have you thought about using a123s for the motor power?? it is becoming popular in the heli sector and working well from what I see.

I have made no plans on ducting the cowl, but I will be opening the firewall and adding a larger exit vent in the tail.

I have not but any thought about using A123 to power my motor. This will be my first time using them. I like the idea using A123 with out a reg, but having the advantage of having a Rx battery that holds its voltage. I having been usings Zippy-R 4,500mAh packs in my CARF Integral/Axi 5330 f3a, and thay have worked great.
