I can remember back in the day.. .60 Glo on a reduction drive..

Be sure and test a piece before starting to cover.. We had to use Econocote back when because it was the only one with a low enough temp as to not melt the foam..

These are some of the wood parts: HS225 servo boxes, Lipo tray, Rudder/Rx/A123 and switch tray, ESC mount and control horn hard points.

My Pitts is currently getting prepped for covering. I would just like to share some of the finer points of Byron’s kits. They are very complete with some nice details and remind me of a very large plastic (Airfix) model.

The fuselage is very simple. Just made up of two halves of injected molded foam with plywood and hard wood pieces added in key locations.

The firewall is standard ¼ ply, but without the vibration of a gas motor, I taken my router and added some lighting holes, as a result reducing the weight of the airframe and allowing airflow over the ESC and Lipos for cooling. I also cut out an air vent I the tail to allow airflow to exit.

The Towerpro motor is mounted to an adjustable mount. This was a very quick and easy solution and sill uses the stock firewall. I fabricated a ply bracket for the 100Amp ESC and is bolted to existing holes on the adjustable mount.

The rudder servos, Rx, switch/battery are simply mounted on a light ply servo try. The lipos will be mounted in a similar manner but this will not be added until I’m ready to set the CG.

Have you tries the ESC yet? I cannot make it work with a TowerPro 5320/14. I tried a 6s pack and it runs, but the motor cannot start with 9S. It kicks back and forth but does not start to run?

The tail plane is plug in with incidence adjusters and held to the fuselage via four bracing wires.

I added hard points the elevators for mounting the control horns. There is a pair an elevator servos mount in the fuselage as I like to have one servo per surface and as direct are possible.

I double beveled the hinge line by using a sand block made out two pieces of triangular balsa to make a 45° cut.

Do you have the programing card? You may need to set the number of cells via the programing card for the ESC to accept 9 cells.

The wings again are just like an airfix kit are completed molded with simulated wing ribs and plywood hard points in key places and spruce spars set inside .

The ailerons are molded with the wing and need to be cut out. I re-beveled them to 45° throw. Just like the tail plane I added hard points for control horns and servo boxes constructed from 3/16 balsa and 1/16 ply, one for each aileron.

I used a router to cut out some servo wire tunnels and capped with depron foam.

The cockpit and canopy are vac formed and adds a nice touch. The canopy will be mounted on rails and will slide open to give access to the lipos and radio.

The cabane struts are injected molded plastic and are epoxyed into hard points into the fuselage. Outer struts are constructed of ¼ balsa faced with 1/32 ply and the threaded inserts set inside.

Glad to see your making progress, since you are covering the plane, do you plan on cutting a few lightning holes aft of the wings to help with the balance and further lighten the airframe? looking at mine I would see no problem doing this since you have a lighter setup than a big zenoah up front. looks good so far!

Fiberglass cowl and wheel spats, very strong sprung sheet alloy landing gear. I replaced the stock wheels with more modern lighter foam wheels

Another neat thing with Byron kits is that they include templates for covering/trim and a full set of decals in Charlie Hillards red devil pitts.

I made no plans on adding any lightning holes to any of the foam parts. The problem I think I would get is the covering bending and warping the surface.
