The Magic Hand 103'Yak powered by a new DL-100 spinning a TBM 27x10 was maidened on Friday with 5 flights and then yesterday at a fun-fly with 9 flights. All I can say is : the more I flew it, the more I liked it. The plane presented very well, the color scheme is very visible, the DL-100, even though new, had tons of power, hovering at 1/2 throttle and then pulling vertical. The plane can fly very slow and still have full crisp control, it flew the IMAC sequence easily and with authority. I only hovered the plane a few times for a very short period, as I did not want to heat up the motor. Based on the hover the plane should 3-D very well in capable hands. Hammerheads and spins are great. When done the assembly, the plane balanced on the money, which was perfect for me. On the inverted 45deg up line it fell very slightly to the canopy, perfect for IMAC. With my crude non scientific way the weight of the plane came in at 27lb. After my bad experience with a DA-85 and a SD Extra I did some extra building on the motor box, which by the way would have been good stock. I wanted to eliminate any possible problems by adding 1" tri stock to the interior of the box following a ply doubler from the firewall to the front of the wing tube, then wrapping the exterior of the motor box in f glass, using Loctite-9462-Hysol epoxy. Should a motor bolt come loose I will not worry about the motor box coming apart. During construction everything but the pull-pull rudder servo is forward of the wing tube, there was NO weight added to get the plane to balance. The DL-100 started right up out of the box and with a few tweeks on the needles it ran like a champ. Contrary to the advice of Bob at DLUSA I did screw the motor to a fence post and run the motor for 2 hours before installing it in the plane. I could not face 2 hours of running-in the engine in the plane on the ground. After my only experience with a big gasser which was a DA-85 I can honestly say the twin vibrates much less, my big single days are over. I am hooked on twins. For any one out there in cyber space looking for their first IMAC plane I would take a serious look at the Magic Hand 103 YAK. Oh, I forgot to mention, I have less money in the plane and engine than I would have had in the cost of a DA-100 with stock mufflers. IMAC here I come next year for sure!!!!! TBM by the way has a huge rebate on the Magic Hand planes.

After putting in some practice on the Basic IMAC sequence for 09, this package will be an excellent starter plane and engine for entry into IMAC. It's presentation is excellent.

You bought this one from DL USA correct ? I noted the "against Bob's advice" part.
I mention this because no way in H E double toothpicks would I run the first gallon through an engine mounted to a plane. Shoot that's what it takes to get to know the carb etc. If an engine can't take that (never had one that couldn't) I don't want it. All of these designs "from the ground up" to be an airplane engine are ALL knockoffs of chainsaws and weed whackers. I should not include weed whackers because they came along way later. Trust me they work in a hard mount with almost airflow over the fins and the work load is way higher and are broken in working . Doing the job they were intended for. Bolt it on go fly or get to know it first, I like to get to know it first and have never flown my $$$ without a gallon through the engine. My 2 cents. I did build a "special" flimsy mount for the DL because I was concerned with the warning. Might break an ear off or something. No worries. the DL's run fine and are stout.

Thanks Doc, hope to see you Sat. Zoomer260, I think DLUSA is just CYA with the recommendation. I have now over 50 flights on the Magic Hand and the DL-100 is on syn oil and is running like a trooper, turning the Vess28A at 6450. Hovers at 1/2 throttle or less. I am impressed at how slow the plane will fly and still have full control. Now to get ready for IMAC 09.

I balanced at the front of the wing tube for the first few flights then slowly moved the CG back slightly. The 3W will pull it around like a ragdoll.

WOW . . just got my DL100 up running on cannisters . . nice ! . .
Brand new . . got the fuel up, 4 or 5 flips on choke and it fired . . 3 flips and it was running. One tank on the ground to see what shakes loose . . then go fly. 4 flights and it's flying Intermediate . . no problem. Cheers, JB
