Default rolling tricks

I thought up something to help out on rolling manuvers while flying on the sim one day. I was practicing rolling circles, and thought, "why not put a neon sticker on one wing tip?" I was used to counting wing tips, so I figured, that I would be able to tell which ruder to use. no sticker, right rudder, sticker, right rudder. It would make it easier to do fast rollers and such. eh?

Dude I just get into a rhythm. Once you get the feel it will be easy! All I really look for is the distinct top and bottom of the plane so I know whats up.

Yeah if you need stickers, you need practice. Just keep practicing and it will feel natural one day. You'll reach a point where your doing it without even thinking about it.

Hey whatever works for you but I agree with airborne, I always make sure im pulling when I see the belly and pushing when I see the canopy and my thumb just knows what to do from all the hours on the sim. You will find in time that its not about remembering what sticks to push but just watching the track of the plane and if its dropping then your late and you need to "get ahead of it". Just stay with it and you will find yourself doing roling loops and figure 8's and steering it wherever you want it while in a high alpha roller. Its my favorite manuver, now if i could just roll left as well as right

You should try to focus on the airplane as a "whole" object (if that makes any sense), i feel it is important to direct partial attention to things like aicraft attitude, altitude, possible close-by r/c traffic etc. as opposed to a sticker on a wing....

thoughtful idea though....

The transition roller is the most fun! Just makes your mind work. When I say roller I also mean rolling harriers etc. You can also experiment with rolling circle harriers into the wind. When you run with the wind is when its easy to make balsa dust.

Seriously I think it took most of us like hours and hours of practice on sims and many gallons of fuel! The best way to describe any type of skill in flying is learning the "feel" of each plane. Once I learned that it seemed a lot easier to do many things.

Attempting fast rollers or any rolling 'trick' will not be successful if you need to count anything. I just kept practicing and practicing and one day it just came to me. The whole leftuprightdown, leftuprightdown, leftuprightdown, leftuprightdown thought process only goes so far.

I can not do "rollers". I say that from the perspective of a student and things I might use to aid me.

I really have not had the desire to do high alpha stuff but I have a plane very capable of such and it will be my 3D trainer one day.

I used to place two bright orange bars from to back on the lower wings of my planes to aid in orientation (bottom and top) in case I had a brain fart at a critical moment at low altitude and did not pull when I should push.I had a problem of pulling in any emergency. Worked very well for me when the trim scheme had the same on top of the wing as did the bottom.

All that said I've watched a lot and attempted this for the heck of it a few times and it seems to be completely a timing or rythem thing. Like rubbing your head and belly in opposite directions at the same time. I don't think a plane marker would help me. Just a whole lot of practice on my timing.

The problem isn't that I can't do rollers, or get in the groove, It's just that the sitckers might help to not get in the groove BACKWARDS and death spiral into the ground, like this

Yes your right about the timing being off but to use the video of leesberg as an exampl, it was rolling to fast for a bright sticker to help. He was trying to do an outside rolling loop and about half way thru missed an input or two and got behind and could not get it back but what he was doing was hitting his inputs of left, down, right ,up and watching the path of the plane. Its really hard to explain but its just something that comes with lots of practice.

I know what he was trying to do, I was just painting a vivid picture with a $10K aircraft
