Default Re: Aerotech? How's the product?

I bought a 35% Velox here a while back and I know it is an older kit. It is already built. Couple of question for you Rob.
Should I do anything to the plane to reinforce or lighten?
Was the design of this plane mainly for IMAC or 3D? The ailerons seem to be a little small for hardcore 3D.
Was the design of the plane to have the hatch built all the way to the tail like sweetpea's Edge becasue that is the way mine is built.
If I need extra parts can you get them?

Thanks for any help

Default Re: Aerotech? How's the product?

The design of the earlier models left the Ailerons small. 3D wasn't that popular 5yrs or so ago. On my recent Aerotech 300 I made the ailerons bigger than what the plans stated. Its worked great for IMAC....I don't 3D it.

As for my Edge I left the ailerons the same size as the plans. I haven't tried any hardcore 3-D with it yet. Currently it is still a hangar queen until after I re-install everything in it from some repairs from awhile back.

As for the long hatch.....you should ensure that it has enough cross bracing to make up for the lack of a turtle deck to keep the fuse from twisting in flight. If you are really worried it is possible to glue the hatch down and cut it back to just after the Canopy like most modern planes. You would have to do some recovering and lots of sanding but it could be done.

Rob can answer other questions though as he has built plenty of Aerotech's planes for other people.

Rob is the man for building these kits and I'd pick his brain. If I didn't live so far away he'd be building me a 40% Su-26 as well~
One thing, as long as you live in the USA your never to far away. I can get you a price on shipping, that's not a problem. I shipped two planes in one crate to Niagara Falls NY for $250.00

If you glue the turtle to the plane you don't need to reinforce anymore than what the plans show. Your not going to find to many planes now that are using a full removable top.
Quote:

The velox can be used for either but was design for IMAC but I have seen it 3D before. Anything is possible. If you are building one, it never hurts to increase the size of the ailerons, just don't get to crazy.

Yes not a problem. If you can't get John, just call me or send me a PM.

Let me know if I missed a question. Rob

No disrespect to Sensei cause I have seen some of his builds and he does nice work, but if he can get a 42% velox down to32-33Ibs with a 170 with cans, him and I need to talk. The best I ever seen on that plane with a 150 on cans was 37Ibs. He would have to find three to four more pounds to shave off. That would be a build thread that I would definitely watch. Rob

They really didn't go anywhere, but due to some bad judgement calls on the part of the owner, things kinda went down hill. But a new beginning is coming. Rob

Oh its not the shipping.......I prefer to stop by during builds and actually help or learn something. That way if I ever ding a plane up and need to repair I have a clue as to how it went together and techniques on fixing it. For me its not conducive to ship it back for repairs.

I've watched your builds Rob and they are top notch!

I have built a 35% Yak from Aerotech, and its a good airplane, but would never do business with them again, read my lips , never.

If you get a kit from someone else and its complete , I would say go for it.

The problem is not the kits, but the owner of the company....

You gotta use white glue everywhere, and make sure you use as much of it as possible. CA hinges are definately the way to go, and make sure you have a decent gap in the control surfaces. I would recommend a single FM receiver with Futaba 3001 servos, you only need one per aileron.

Probably the biggest tip I could give is to not listen to me
