Mark,

The plane has so much wing loading that it must be flown at or near full throttle. The engine will pull the plane through a loop, barely, knife edge is also full throttle or it drops.. I can't slow the plane down and relax, just not fun.
WrongWayRC, Nice plane, I'd get one expect it won't fit under my truck bed cover.
I've looked at a lot of planes and the Yaks seam to have more wing area for the wing span which I think translates in to less wing loading. The SD 30% Yak looks like it might fit the bill.
I'm going to CA for Thankgiving so I guess I'll have time sort through all the options.

Hi Lonnie,

thanks for the reply, sounds like a not much fun plane to fly?

Good luck with whichever new plane you decide on, yaks are just great i have the qq and gp, qq flies superb. Yes more weight on a lite plane gives it extra wing loading and needs to be flown faster and lands faster, i can testify to this having a small ef extra with a os91 4stroke in, flies faster than the lighter electric version or saito powered, still flies great though. So i can only imagine heavy engine on a heavy plane makes it like a missile to fly.

Surprising to me was, I installed my 3W56 iB2 at 4.1# bare with a Mac's muffled tuned pipe into my GP Ultimate. It flew better than it did with the ZDZ50 on a wrap around that was a Whole pound lighter. So you might look around for a good used ultimate if you need a plane to fit your pickup.

All,

What is your opinion of the QUIQUE SOMENZINI 86" YAK 54 ARF? Comes with CF tubes and includes the needed hardware.
The only thing I don't like are the CA hinges. I'd have to replaced those with Robart pin hinges.

The QQ planes are awsome.
If you stick with the big three arf companies out there you can not go wrong.
Don't forget to look at the Hanger 9 SU-26

The QQ plane are decent fliers, I had the GII 35% and I flew it 1 1/2 yrs, made me progress in my skills from b4, then when the 40% was done I sold, and I wish I had'nt . I really liked it, but it was a PITA to assemble, nothing went together w/o some modifications to it. That is a good choice, when/if you get it and you need help with anything, let me know and we will get together.

The QQ is a good plane, and at the sale price they are at now I would jump on one. If the QQ plane was not on sale, I would buy the SD yak and spend up the difference on CF landing gear and maybe a CF wingtube/stabtube set if you can afford it. I haven't bought one of the SD planes since Ace took over the distribution, but the craftsmanship on them previously was better (a lot better in my opinion) than the QQ planes. The covering on the QQ planes is better, but the woodwork underneath is better handsdown on SD. The cf wingtube only saves you 5 or 6 oz on the 50cc sized planes, the cf landing gear about the same. Most of the aluminum gear on the ARF's out of China are pretty soft and don't seem to hold up well so the landing gear may be a better investment. Good luck!

I can't help it but DawgHouse RC has it's 30% Yaks on sale for $400 right now. Comes with carbon fiber wing tube. stab tube and tailwheel. I have one and it floats very well came in at 16lbs with DL-50 stock muff. No fancy power system just NIMH batts 4.8 on ign 1700 Ma and 2000 on reciever. I have the 55-SP.

Put some tri-stock in the engines box and go over things with CA. It would not hurt this plane one bit to carry a stock G-62 weight. Has encosed pipe tunnel also. Pre-installed hinges (not glued) robart style. Massive throw available on control surfaces if ya like that.

If you are lookin' to get your gear back in the air low $$$ and you like Yaks I vote for this one. But it is not an Extra with a round cowl. I tried to stall it at idle (high about 1900) two mistakes up to see if it would drop a wing and the thing just kept flyin' around.

Thanks for the info about the sale on Yaks. That blue one sure looks nice. I got an offer for a Hanger 9 89" Yak for $500.00 All these choices is beginning to make my head hurt.

Mike, I might just take you up on that.

Are you sure they are CA hinges? He usually uses flat, pin hinges. You can't convert a plane designed around a flat style hinge to accept robart hinges without tearing the covering off and adding balsa blocks where all the robarts will go so they have enough surface area to glue them.
If he does include CA hinges, just replace them with Dubro flat hinges or similar.
It is a good plane and a good price.

Well now I'm really undecided. I've narrowed it down to 3 Yaks. Anyone have experience with all 3 of the following? I'll be using a G62, looking for a floater. Thanks for the info on the hinges.

If i were to buy one of the choices you provide...I ...would get the H9 yak, Lonnie at the flyin you should have seen Brad's sitting right next to my Yak. It is a very nice flying plane, we've all had a pull on the sticks, pull the trigger.
I personally have no experience with the DawgHouse Products, so I cant say, although did you notice that it is a Yak 55 and not a 54, didnt know if you had a preference.
I had a 35% QQ Yak(not 50cc) it was a great flying plane but a bear to assemble.
Dont sweat the hinges, they are a breeze to glue in.
