Default NEWBIE building a CMP Extra 300 - 140

Hi All:

First off, thanks for reading this!

I'm new to Flying Giants and Sport R/C. Been flying trainers (foamy electrics and wood .40 nitros) previously and fell in love with the Extra 300L design and looks. I just bought a CMP Extra 300 - 140 size.
SPECS:
Wing Span: 72.5" Weight: 11.45lb Length: 64" Wing Area: 837sq.in Wing Loading: 31.58oz./sq.ft. Engine Required: 2c 108 ~ 160, 4c 120 ~ 140 Radio 4 Channel 6 Servos
LOOKING FOR HELP TO DO IT RIGHT.

With that said; could someone please advise me on how to set this up RIGHT?
-Engine (brands and size, .90, 1.20, 1.42???)
-Radio system (Spektrum Dx6i???)
-Prop size?
-Settings??

I'll rate my skill level as novice - intermediate. I would like to perform mild aerobatics (loops, rolls), but basically fly the model around more like a scale a/c and not so much like a 3D.

Thanks for your Help!

11/20/08 - The box arrived from A-K Models---fast service! It is BIG - (notice the 12oz Pepsi can). Can't wait to get this started! This is my first sport a/c!

Default NEWBIE building a CMP Extra 300 - PART II

READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL 4 TIMES......

11/21/08 - Decided to take the plunge and start assembling this kit. Admittedly being a new-jack, I probably would have benefited from more detailed instructions (see attached), but since this wasn't my very first a/c kit, I was able to overcome the somewhat vague instruction manual, which I might add, wasn't originally written in English. LOL

In addition, it might be wise to have a builder's triangle with metric measurements, since ALL of the measurements in the instructions are metric. (Weren't we supposed to go all metric in the 1980's?? - LOL)

Default NEWBIE building a CMP Extra 300 - PART IV

Here are some building items that came in handy during the assembly of this ARF kit.

1. Builder's Triangle (with METRIC measurements - VERY IMPORTANT)
2. 5 minute epoxy (elevator spar, tail wheel steering arm)
3. 15 minute epoxy (hinges, wing and elevator mounting pin installation)
4. blow dryer or covering iron to smooth out the few bubbles you may find)
5. metric hex drivers (installing landing gear, engine mounts, etc)
6. small metric socket set (3 - 14mm)
7. 5/64", 7/32" and 15/64" or metric equivalent drill bits
8. Top Flite clear coat spray (for sealing those awesome graphics)

Good luck with that. What kind of servos are you going to use? I just ordered an Extreme Flight Yak 74". I'm planning to put smoke in it too. I think I'll go with the Hitec HS5645MG's. I've built a bunch of other planes but nothing this big. Biggest to date is a Carl Goldberg 1.20 Ultimate with an OS .90FX.

Good luck trying to find any info on that setup . I picked one up a couple years ago (already built airframe) , and searched for info on what to properly power it with . Never really got much for responses , only speculation from others who can also read the numbers on the websites . I saw one fly last summer with a Webra 35 cc gas engine , but it didn't seem to have the vertical punch i was looking for . I mounted a CRRC 50 cc on the nose , but never got a chance to fly it before the snow came . I think it might be too much engine , but we shall see come springtime . Wish i could be of more help , but for now , that's all i got .

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your response. I'm still not sure what kind of servos I'll use in this ship. I've been looking at the Spektrum DX6i, since I've heard good things about it. I am however thinking about putting an OS .90 (or slightly larger) in to see how it flies. Well, its the building season here in the East, so I have a little time to decide between now and the Spring thaw!

Happy Holidays!

I know what you mean. I almost feel like a bought the wrong brand, wrong model (etc.), as I'm not getting many responses at all. Oh well, sometimes in hobbies you have to be a "pioneer". LOL! I'll make sure to keep documenting my build here just in case anyone's watching / reading silently!

Happy Holidays!

Maybe a little late but here is my response.
I just have one CMP Katana, same size that your extra.
I have it setup with my reliable Moki 1.80, anyway, go with an engine not less than 1,40 (ST2300) on 2 stroke or YS 140 or Saito 150 on 4 stroke and would be enough, if you can go with OS 1.60 you`ll be very happy.
Use good servos, high torque is mandatory in these planes, less than 120 oz. would be risky. In my plane I use a mixture of Hitec 5625 and 5645

Ok I built the CMP 140 pro Giles last year, O.S 160 way over powered for this size aircraft, unless you want 1/3 throttle pull out from hover, maybe you do. I have a an O.S 120 ax in mine, this 120 can actually hover this 12 lbs plane at full throttel on an 16/8 prop, ya O.S 120ax hovers a 12 lb plane... gottal love there AX series, engine has never quite once or sputtered in 50 flights. Only once when my 3 years old turned my needle vavle one full turn rich, with out me knowing in the basement, the next day it loaded up during slow flight at 50 ft and flamed out. lol, gotta love kids.

Any way I have 90z futabas on all surfaces, this plane flys great the guys at the field think this plane is awsome, expecially for the price and lower end arf company, except for the china coat this kit is one great bang for the dollar.... cheers..

Hi there-

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but do you by chance still have the manual for the katana?
I was just given the 140 katana s and would like to see how they did things n the manual, instead of guessing. I suppose I can manage without it, but no removeable canopy, and the tiny hatch on the bottom is making me a bit nervous...... Thanks in advance, and I hope the thread proves useful!

Hi Darren!

Thanks for your response and info on the OS 120ax with the 16/8 prop. I've written down those specs in my manual and when I'm ready to try some 3D flight maneuvers, I have them ready. For now though, I just want to have some successful first flights with my Extra and get to know her . I've always heard good things about OS engines, and I even have one in my .60 trainer. You get what you pay for with them! This 14lb 73" span Extra is a departure from the norm for me though. Because of its size (the fuselage is w-i-d-e), its a bit intimidating to me, so I'll probably get one of the club trainers to help me feel it out. I really wish I could find a 2 stroke in between the .90 OS and the 1.20 (lol) - i'll keep looking and asking.

I've also noticed that the covering job on this model is not the best of quality (i know, i have to remember the origin of the kit!), so i'm going over it completely with a covering iron and afterwards I will clear coat it to help keep the graphics intact and the trim edges sealed. Since the snow is here to stay at this point, i don't really mind - not much else to do except build models (and confidence).

Cheers!

Francisco,
Thanks for your response and the advice on servos and engines. I haven't made these purchases yet, since the weather here has turned cold, so I'm taking my time and trying to build this one right. I have the model together, so except for the engine and radio, it is complete.

I'm hoping to catch a mid winter sale (lol) and pick up a Spektrum Dx6i. Next step will be to pick up a suitable 2 stroke engine for this girl.

I have to be honest with all who read this, that as time has gone on, and I've spent more time assembling, adjusting and just looking at this aircraft, I've become somewhat intimidated by its beauty and size - in other words, I don't want to crash this one!!

Oh well, back to more practice on the sim. I also picked up a Realflight G4 sim and have been flying the Extra in the windiest and nastiest conditions so that hopefully I can develop the mechanical responses and reflexes that will allow me to go out and be successful with the real thing.

Thanks again for the advice!
