Default AeroWorks 85cc Yak Build w/pics

I am going to post some photos of my build. If nothing else it give me a reason to keep going on this project. It should be a pretty simple build so I am not sure how much technical info will be provided??

I will be using 8711's, DA-85, Greeve's pipe(since there is a full length tunnel),

Working on the engine. Here is a pic with cowl. It is right at 6" from the front of the motor box to the front of the cowl. The DA-85 has a mount flange to drive hub distance of 5 13/16' then there is the DA85 spacer that AeroWorks provides is 15/16" and it has a cut out for adjusting the carb needles.

I usually do the engine first for some reason. I spent a few hours going over the covering earlier. I pretty much just went over the edges with the iron and hit the rest with the air gun. It shrunk up very well. There were quite a few wrinkles in some areas. I did get the Rudder epoxied on last night. I just ironed what I needed to(hinge line).
So here is the engine mocked up. I used the provided wood template, drilled the 4 mounting holes., put on the spacer, lined spacer up with a couple of screw drivers. Then I drill out the other 2 with 1/4" drill bit(through spacer and fuse), put 1/4 bolts in the holes and drilled out other two.

I will be using 4 swb 1.25" arms. I am not sure on the rudder. On my AW Extra 260(MTW 110 can), I used 1.25" half arm on the rudder(tail mounted). I am not sure where this plane will balance with the Greeve's pipe.

I got the AW dash panel and a 4" Tru-Turn P-51 spinner(lightened, drilled for DA-85 and relieved for a Menz prop).

****update Jan 09****
I checked elevator servo arms. With 1.25" arms and using the middle holes on the control horns I have full deflection with 140% end points.

Rudder: I used a 2.5" arm. 140% travel, outside holes on the horn gave me about 43 degrees. I moved the cables to the middle hole and have 48 degree of through. The 3" arm would be a great choice, I may swap it out later.

Default 75-85cc Wings!! Comparison

How about this Jazz?? I always wondered about the specs you read about on these planes!!
AW 75cc Extra 260= 1625 sq in; AW 85cc Yak= 1705 sq in; Dietrich 75cc Extra 260= 1700 sq in. Number from Manufactures websites.
Dietrich Extra(top), AW Extra(middle), AW Yak(bottom)

Based on your pics, it would seem that the wing area spec is just about right.
I,ve got a AW 75cc Extra sitting waiting to be started. I was thinking about the new 85cc Yak but decided to go with the Extra as it was available when I placed the order.

Good Luck.

You're going to love this plane, I have the 75cc AW Yak/ZDZ Super 80 combo that I flew all this year, the 85cc is just a bit larger, it should fly almost like a 100cc plane but the power to weight will be a lot better. Mine is a rocket, insane power, unlimited vertical. Keep the pics coming, looks great so far. BTW I used 1.25" arms on the ailerons and 1.5"" on the elevator, 5955's all the way.

Well not too much progress today. Spent the day out at the field(awesome weather here). But here is my throttle/choke servo install. It was lot easier on the Extra!! Not a lot of wiggle room on the Yak. I had to cut the servo mounts down flush with bottom of the servo. I think I am going to just mount the rudder servo up front for a pull-pull. At least half of the Greeve's will be behind the balance point. A lot different than the AW Extra 260 and MTW 110 can setup where the rear mounted servo balanced it perfect. Onto the the rear stab now I guess??

Had a little time after dinner, so I piddled with the ignition. I also worked on the rear stab, I shrunk the covering and mounted the servos. I need to check into whether or not I need to go with 1.5" arms now?? I have both here on the bench.
I got the ignition box, switch and Smart-Fly Opt-Ign Kill receiver installed tonight.
