Default Motor/ESC help

Ok. I won this plane back at the 2008 Vegas IMAC. I've donated it to my daughter since its pink.

I put it all together but I need some help on brushless motor/ESC/Battery choices.

So what's a good combo out there for not alot of dough but still make it somewhat 3-D capable. I'd like something I can put in another airplane at later date as well.

Sam, check out the Axi line of motors. I am very happy with the large Axi on my B.A.Glider, and others at my local field have also had success with their Axi motors. Probably not the cheapest option but they are more economical than a comparable Hacker outrunner and they will last a very, very long time. It looks like one of the Axi 2212 models would suit your model's needs. I mean, uh, you're daughter's plane. Yeah that's the ticket. (you know you like the pink)

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/brushless-axi2212.htm

For a battery you'll want a 3S pack capable of at least a 20-amp continuous discharge. I am absolutely thrilled with my DualSky 3S 1320 packs, available from www.2dogrc.com .

I was thinking of the Eflite 480 because it costs $69 with mounts and the Axi 2212 is $79 plus $15 for the mounts, but I have not heard anything about them good or bad. I plan to then use my crashed Phase 3 F-16 30amp ESC.

When I finally get around to the F-16 rebuild (needs a new fuse/wing) then I'd get a 40amp 4s ESC for it.

Also my F-16 batts I feel are too big. They are 3s 2300. They really won't fit in the fuse and are heavy to boot.

I have a like new 2212-26 AXI motor for sale if interested $50 shipped. Has 3 flights on it but never crashed. In fact it was on a plane that I hand launched and retreived. I will supply the radial mount kit for free. LMK. Here is the link http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=959603

Ok, so now I have AXI 2212-26 motor. I tried the ESC from my Phase 3 F-16.

Its rated at 30amps 3cell lipo. The motor barely runs on this ESC and then shuts off rather quickly. Plugged it back into the F-16 motor and it screams. Guess its not upto the job.

What ESC should I use then?

Eflite 40amp?
Castle thunderbird 36amp?

I was using a CC Phoenix 25 with a 1200 3 cell with great power. There may be a setting in your ESC that needs adjustment. I was running an APC 10 X 3.8 prop which gives the best performance for that motor. I gave up on most ESC and have stuck with Castle for there reliability and under rated power curves. Also the Phoenix link makes it a snap to set up!!!

I got it to work on my castle 15. (I think that is what it is). It looks like it'll be ok for now, I ran it for about 5mins varying the throttle and the ESC got warm but not hot. Battery was fine temp wise. I'm gonna upgrade to something bigger down the road (after Xmas, I'm broke!)

Alright, I'd like to say thanks to everyone for their help.

Friday I flew the plane and crashed it. Not real bad, the cowl was destroyed and the motorbox came apart. Not sure what happened at that time.

Fast forward to today, I had fixed the motorbox and tried another flight. The elevators stick a little so I'll have to drill out the tube guides. On landing the plane was real pitchy. Since I had thrown the instruction manual away I couldn't remember the CG. I moved the Batt all the way forward and flew again.

Now it flew great. Elevator still sticks once in awhile so I'll drill that out tonight. Now I just need to order a new cowl, and cover the wings clear portions with some colors so my daughter can tell top from bottom better. I'll also put some orange on the left side to help her as well.

Your F-16's ESC is timed for an Inrunner and the PWM is likely way off for the AXi. AXi's like High Timing. Your Castle 15 will be fine. Your amperage with a 10x3.8 will be around 15 amps static, so probably only 12-13 in the air. GOOOOD Setup!
