Almost two months ago I bought a Lanier 33% Laser 200 with 'little' damage from a hard landing. I have sourced some parts like servo's and a Titan/Zenoah ZG74. The plane is now ripped apart to do modifications, like making it lighter and providing room for a tuned pipe in a tunnel.
I am going to remove a number of heavy parts and replace them for lighter examples. Alu landing gear with wheels weighs about 1kg! and the turtle deck + hatch are about 500 gr. together. The plane has more damage to the structure than expected. A lot of struts in the frame are loose, so I need to check everything . Here are some pictures. This one will be fun to watch.
I guess it will be a duel pipe tunnel.

No, I am going to use a Y-Header from Toni Clark so that I can use one tuned pipe and one tunnel.

if you look in this picture you will see the NEW Laser from Bob Godfrey , it is a 35%er with airfoiled tails ,removable stabs ,and all the goodies . Right now the DA 85 with the KS 95 fuse muffler is in it and the weight is 17lbs 1oz ..
I have to install the servo's for the control surfaces and the fuel tank , the wing span is 100" , should be around the 20lbs mark .

will be good to see what the plane will weigh after you cut out all the holes in the fuse. you going to do anything to the wings?

Yes, I am wondering about the final weight as well. Also wondering whether I could get some more (smaller holes) out of the side area where the wings are attached to the plane. Looking at the 35% Laser of Bob (Sensei), I would think it should be possible.
Don't think I will do anything to make the wings lighter, except for maybe drilling some holes in the ailerons. I could go for a CF wingtube, but I don't think my budget will allow it. I have ordered nice CF landinggear and a 3-blade CF prop 22x12, I have Hitec 645MG's for ailerons and elevators and I will get a Hitec HS-5955TG for the tail soon. Not sure whether to put the Tailservo in the tail of somewhere in the middle of the fuse and get pull-pull wires for the tail. |

I am also thinking about replacing the original aluminum motor mount with one from plywood and carbon fiber. Can anyone tell me whether the ignition unit has to be attached to the motor? Or can I just remove it and place it on the firewall or somewhere else.
If I can place it somewhere else it would be easier to make a plywood firewall. Let me hear your thoughts please... Last edited by MadDuc; 12-09-2008 at 06:52 PM. Reason: spelling..... |

I believe that I would go for the servo in the tail section , trying to avoid pull-pull ..
my $.02

Ok, but can you also tell me why? Is it easier? Or needed because the plane might end up nose-heavy? ........ |

the plane generally does end up a little/lot nose heavy and is a lot easier with "direct linkage"
