Thinking about selling my 100cc 260 before I ever start it! This is one bad plane.

I got to do the maiden flight today, even had a pretty good audience. All I can say is that this is the best flying 50cc plane that I have ever flown! It was obvious to everyone at the field today how stable and sweet this thing is and everyone commented on how nice it looks and flies. I know people are always making claims like this, but I gave it one click of trim on elevator and one click on aileron, then made a length of the field pass, hands off. The only thing even slightly negative that I can find is that on a bumpy grass runway, it really has a tendency to nose over. Not really a big problem, just be sure to hold up elevator when taxiing. Final weight came out at 20lbs with ZDZ60 and smoke system, and cg is right on the recommended mark. For heavy duty 3d flying you will probably want to move it back a little more, but I loved the way the plane felt as is. I might put a softer tail wheel on it to help keep the tail from bouncing too much on our rough field. Didn't try any 3d stuff, I'm not very good at it and would not be able to give a good eval anyway. Can't wait to get back out flying.

Glad to see you got yours in the air JT. Looks like a great plane. Can't wait to hear what others are saying about it. I hope that we see some come in at 17lbs or less.

If I remember correctly, the ZDZ80 is very much the same as the 60 as far as weight and most dimensions.....imagine this plane with the 80 on it!!

I think you will get a prop problem(clearaence) and it will hover at idle with a 80cc

The 80 and 60 have the same mounting dimensions. The 80 is slightly heavier, but it's not much of a difference, all in all, it would be very doable as far as fitting. You would definitely have to use a 3 blade prop and be careful with the ground handling. But I see no reason to do it, it has a ton of power with the 60, even at 20 lbs. As for getting one down to 17 or less, use a light 50cc, skip the smoke system and keep the other stuff to a minimum and you would be there. I wouldn't sweat it too much though, mine feels and flys light, with all of that wing area the loading is still very low.
JT

Ps. I have a 80 sitting on the shelf and had considered using it if I didn't like the 60, but I'll just save it for another project.

I made a template for the Evolution 58gx from the DA50 template that came with the plane. The width is the same and is about 1/2 inch higher. The rear cover has to be rotated 180 degrees so the carburetor goes in the hole in the firewall.

Statbeast,
I've got a half dozen flights on mine now. The only change I've made was to reduce the aileron throws. They are VERY effective and it just doesn't need much throw, 12-15 degrees is plenty for regular flying. I have done a little 3d type flying with it, and it's the easiest plane to torque roll I've ever flown. It's rock solid in harriers and flat spins are awesome. Even with a full load of fuel and smoke oil it still flies very light. It also has very little rudder coupling, comparable to the extra's.

That sounds awesome
Just need to finnish my assembly and wait for things to dry up a bit more.
Being the field manager at our club, I am just waiting for it to dry out a bit more so that we can start rolling the field. Early in the season we always end up with a bumpy field from the frost in the winter. We fly the smaller planes, but I would rather the field to be in better conditions before I take this one out.

Been getting lots of flights lately. Put about 2.5 gallons through it now and logged approximately 30 flights. This plane keeps getting better and better.
I have started leaning the needles and getting the engine running smoother and smoother.
Next is a new cannster of fuel with a bit less oil.
Here are some shots at the field.

I wondered what happen to you, glad to see the photos. I am almost finished with mine. The weather has been really bad for flying, high winds and rain. I had to make a few modifications on the choke and throttle linkages. Everything looks good now. I am starting out with a Xoar 24x10 on the Evolution 58. I still have to weigh it.

Happy flying,
