Hi Guys,
I see from Donatas ef yak 110 vid that the plane has an open cowl no baffling he has a carbon spinner fitted my question as i have a gp yak and have just fitted a 4 inch mejzlik lightweight carbon spinner is will the spinner spool air over the cowl and reduce the drag created by the centre of the prop not being covered ie no spinner. Anyone had experience with spinner no spinner trials or am i just wasting my time, as the plane fits great in my smaller car with no spinner and i will have to refit at field everytime i fly then remove to come home in this vehicle.. Well Ill just run it thursday and find out if a spinner makes any difference, will the plane fly slightly better with less drag off the prop or will it fly worse with less drag on a downline, anyway at least i can remove the 40 g of weight on engine box.

You may want to consult the AMA rules on Spinner or No Spinner.

there is no spinner rule.it will not make any noticeable diff with or without a spinner.you will get proper air flow if you have an exit to let the air move thru the cowl.just wtch that it does not change your cg too much without the spinner.the big boys qq and so on remove their spinners to move the cg back for free style flying and it makes a difference

Exciter,
I am not so sure and that is why I said to check on it. I think I have read somewhere that AMA has safety rule that all planes must have spinner. I always use one so it don't bother me. Of course I may be wrong. Zee |

So basically a spinner besides c of g reason makes no difference, well as my plane is now setup for 3d i guess the extra 70g will make it more precise. Anyway Im keen to see for myself and will have first hand experience of what differnece a spinner makes to airflow and flight charecteristics.
It does look better without. Mark |

Here's a couple of pics of a "full size" aerobatic SU-31 that has decided to "minimize" the spinner....

Well having 4 flights with the spinner then 4 without, i can say the plane becomes so different i was amazed. Withe the extra 70gms weight the plane flies so much more precise but wow did i notice a huge power difference and longer takeoff and better glide on landing. The plane was far less pitch responsive, making for a more precise handling and felt heavier on the sticks.
Spinner off and im back to way tail heavy and way more fun, the vertical is so much different i cant believe 70g could make that much difference. The plane flies super lite and super sensitive , great fun. Anyway if i decide to fly precisely or add some polish to my flying i ll stick the spinner back on but it way more fun with no spinner. Its definately shown me the massive difference c of g makes on this plane, i would not have believed it had i not tried it!!!!!! Mark |
