Very interesting stuff Matt.
One of these days I'll pull the trigger and start doing some full scale stuff. Actually full scale anything would be great. I got a real interest boost right after my dad sold our 170 a few months ago. I miss that airplane already, I want to try and get it back! An interesting note, one of our pattern contests this year was in Warrenton. With it being a beautiful weekend, the fullscale activity was in full swing. There was a Christen Eagle right over the field about 4000 feet doing some aerobatics, and I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. It's a good thing I wasn't judging at the time, because no scores would have been given, and it's a good thing I wasn't flying at the time, because my airplane would have flown away. I love models and pattern, but there is something about fullscale that sends shivers up my spine, every time I see it, and especially hear a prop bark. Out of curiosity, you flew your Cap with a four blade on it for a while initially, didn't you? What differences do you see between the three and four blade props, and do you swing a larger three blade than you did four blade? If I remeber correctly, the Europeans use them for noise, but I didn't know if it had any performance rammifications or not. Last thing, how were you able to fly with wood coming out of the wings?!?! I would have been scared to death of a catastrophic failure. I guess people fly around with worse, not being able for it to fall in their laps, though. |

Matt, that was a great performance. I grew up in Fairfax, and spent alot of time flying in and out Warrenton, Manassas Virginia area with my father before his fatal accident. Lots of great pilots and planes around that area. I hope to see one of your performances some day.

I saw Leo at Oshkosh in 1988 or 89... all I can say is WOW!!! He did a whole mixed up sequence of rolls... pt rolls both ways on take off!!! I think I saw Clint McHenry also... and though I could see more precision in his flight, it lacked the Jaw-Drop factor that Leo had....

Matt, I finally was able to download the video on my current POS ISP. Wow man that is a great show. From what I have seen you just dont see that much high energy precision in airshow sequences anymore. It looked like you flew more snaps than the unlimited sequence probably had that year. Is there a technique you use for sustained neg G's or are you just conditioned to deal with it??

The launch of the foamy was an amazing thing! How you eneded up leaving with both eyes I'll never know! Franks lightning fast reactions are almost as amazing as my flying 'skills'.
The photo of the Lazer with the white spinner is after I owned it. Hilton Tallman put an MT, constant speed prop on the plane when he owned it. I never had the money to do it, plus it makes that airplane (not all Lazers, Lasers) nose heavy. mc Last edited by Matt Chapman; 12-19-2008 at 12:46 PM. |
