Default What next sized plane?

I have been flying a Fancy Foam Edge and then a Insane Foamies Yak. Both about 36 inch foamies. I have a MUS that I take to the AMA flying field. Would really like to do 3D at the AMA field and figure a 47 inch plane would be about right. I want to be able to hover and harrier like with my foamies. I realize from watching the Nitro guys that not all planes, even supposedly 3D planes, fly as well as the foamies listed. I have read that the 3DHS Extra SHP would be "the" plane to step up to that size plane. Any opinions on the Extra or any other plane. I realize everyone will have their opinion and not all alike. That'a OK. I am just getting ideas now so I can be ready by spring. The PA Extra 260 looked good in the videos too. I realize that those pro fliers make it look easy so I would like to know how the planes fly for mere mortals with a couple years of 3D foamy flying.

Glow or Electric

It's hard to go wrong with Extreme Flight or 3DHS

Give Ben a call at 3DH, describe what you are looking for and he will hook you up.

Electric preferably. If I went much bigger (like 72 inch or more), gas would probably be good. I might just call Ben if I don't decide soon.

Compared to a foamy how does the 3DHS planes compare in ease of hovering and Harrier? I have seen some over 47 inch planes that were poor in hovering, harrier, and high angle of attack manuevers. They had lots of wing rock and tip stall.

A well-designed small electric will be capable of harriers and hovers, though foamies really do have an edge in that department in that size range. I have seen a 3DHS Extra in action and it looked great although the pilot wasn't doing much harrier work. Here's another option on consider, an Aeromaster Yak:

For $65 that's a pretty good deal on a built-up electric ARF, in fact I've had a couple foamies in that price range. Granted they were awesome foamy designs but the Yak is a great deal. Here's a video of it in action:

I have been looking at the 3DHS Edge 47 inch. Will it handle a 15 to 20 MPH wind with easy? How about a 20 to 25 MPH wind? I realize that at those speeds sometimes the turbulance of the gusts can be a deciding factor. I am thinking more like normal wind and not like super gusty. The videos looked good and the plane seemed to hover and harrier well. Is there much coupleing?

Will you be doing any precision flying with it too, or just 3D? If you want both, go with the EF 47" Yak, or 45" Extra. I had the Yak, and just loved it! It was SO solid! I have flown the Extra as well, and it's just a great plane! I highly recomend these two! EF's quality, flight performance, and looks are second to none! I am speeking from experience!
Here's a video of me doing some 3D with it. The video was taken a while ago, before I started flying low, and practicing IMAC, but it gives you an idea of what the plane can do 3D wise. 1st half is the EF 58" Extra, which is in my opinion, the best electric plane on the planet, and the Yak is 2nd.

If you want somthing for 3D ONLY, they are still awesome planes, but the 3DH Extra is a great 3D only plane. It isn't all that precise, but if you are going to be hovering, and harriering most of the time, you will like it. The PA-260 is also an excelent 3D only plane. I did not buy mine, but a guy gave it to me in return for me building another plane for him. Here's a video of me wringing it out in the snow: http://www.flyinggiants.com/gallery/...hp?photo=54960

Hope this helps!

I ordered the 3DHS Edge 47 inch in Red. I really like the looks especially with the Red Bull decals that one can buy for it. I don't fly IMAC. Only 3D so it will do nicely.

I don't have the Edge but I do have:

47 Yak
47 Extra 300 SR
47 Velox Revolution
47 Extra 300 SHP
49" Suk-26 (never flown, needs servos)
51 AJ Slick
55 Extra 300 SHP
87 Extra 300 SHP (just got here today so no reports on flight)

Out of those, KNOWING when I get the 50cc SHP up it will be my favorite, the current favorite all around 3D plane is the 51" Slick, followed by the Velox and larger 55" SHP.

The Velox is insane..violent fast tumbles/snaps and harrier performance is great for my thumbs. 51" Slick is even easier for me to harrier. The 55" Extra comes in right with these for my money.

I've heard the Edge is right up there but I didn't grab it due to the 87" taking priority (go big right?).

I don't think I would get through a flying season without the Velox and Slick though.

To the guys talking about Extreme Flight: Use their motors/escs religiously and love them. I know I'll end up with one of Chris' ARFS down the road. I'm thinking they're very similar to 3DHS.
