Does anyone have any advice on the best way to install a DA 100 on the Comp Arf Yak 2.6? Template to drill holes, shimes for engine torgue, Spacers etc?
I am new to giant scale gas airplanes and would appreciate any help or tips from anyone who has done this before. Thank you |

I have one with a BME 115 and unfortunately the way described in the Yak manual works out about the best. You can make a simple backplate template with some 1/8" ply and about 12" of 3/8" wood dowel to substitute as the prop shaft. The firewall already has some ofset built into it.
Do not install anything inside the fuselage until you have the engine final mounted. The gas tank and mount gets in the way of everything, and access to the back of the firewall is tough enough without having the tank in the way. The tank and tray go in last. If you elect to use the manufacturer supplied rudder tray and servo arms take extreme care to mount the servo arms on the wheels exactly the same for each servo. Adjusting them to eliminate binding is near impossible if the arms are not positioned on the servo wheels exactly the same. Nice thing about the Yak. You have a lot of "play" room for the distance you want the prop ahead of the cowl ring. Just about any amount looks good. Take your time and read the manual twice before you begin. |

If for some reason you do not have the manual you can download it off the composite-arf website. You can also use one 8711 on each surface and simplify the setup a great deal.
Good luck you will like the plane, it is a great flyer. Rick

I have owned 2 of the 2.6 Yaks and currently have a 3.0 Yak. This method works better than any described in the manual. It requires at least 2 people to help.
Take the fuse and place it vertically on its tail (leave the rudder off obviously). The tail obviously should be on a piece of foam to provide protection. Climb up on a ladder and set the engine on the firewall with the standoffs. Center it is muchas you can. Now...place the cowl on the fuse...take a ruler and measure the clearance from all sides of the prop shaft to the cowl opening. Measure every 90 degrees...Once you have the distance the same...on 12:00, 3:00 6:00 and 9:00...your engine is centered...Take a sharpie or other pen and mark the holes...Now your ready to drill your engine mount holes. Another good idea is laminate the firewall with carbon fiber. It keeps the wood from compressing. |

Firewall thrust is fine. DA 100 was the best motor I had in mine.

The 2.6 Yak is pretty easy to put together. You can make it even more simple by using a single 8711 on each inboard aileron servo mount and one 8711 on the rudder. This plane can be built with 5 servos plus a throttle servo and do anything you can throw at it. It tends to be tail heavy, so a DA-100 (old style) is ideal, but Im sure things can be positioned around to make the DA-100L work too. Take all your batteries and stuff them in front of the fuel tank...
With all the new technology out there, you can make a 100cc plane (espeically composite) as simple as a 50cc plane. I miss my old 2.6 Yak and would probably buy another one if I had scale back...I have a 3.0 Yak now and love it...but the 2.6 is a lot more fun to toss around in the air...It is much more 3d capable.. |
