We did some building over the weekend and pretty much most of the major stuff is gone. I am hold until Tower ships me some Futaba 9157 servos. I decided to give them a try instead of the 8711s.
This thing is really easy to build, we are slow and will be finished in another day. The only thing we really changed was that I wanted to use the 3W round tank, and since I am running mufflers, we decided to put the tank in the can tunnel. On the motor mount....eventhough the drill pattern for the DA170 is the same as the 3W 150, our holes ended up being in a slightly different location than the template for the 3W. We used the tried and true method of standing the plane on its tail and centering the motor in the cowl. I also used two 3/8" lasercut light ply standoffs to get about 1"-1.5" spacing from the prop hub to the round cowl. I got the spacers from Wayne Matthews and they work great. He received them from Mark McClellan of McFueler fame, If anyone is interested in obtaining the ply plates, Mark can be contacted at markmcclellan@charter.net |

Good call on the servos. The 9156's I used last year were GREAT, no wear, fast, smooth, perfect centering and mucho power. I put single 9157's in the tail of your old Krill using 1" servo arms (I am only expecting to use approx 15deg of throw and even with 1" arms I can get 22 deg.)
The new plane is looking great. With normal mufflers its going to be light! |

I am looking forward to getting them. I hope Tower has them soon. I guess I missed the first batch. That should be great on the Krill. I think my sequence setting had about 10-12 degrees of elevator throw. |

9157s are back in stock. Hopefully I get them by the weekend. We could have that baby in the air if the weather holds.

Hi John,
You got me with your Yak, I got mine in December and its still on the table :S But I went for vacation to see my gf so I have an excuse... Same as you for the wood box, it was very strong but I dont know what they did with it !! Its like the pallet truck just made 2 holes trying to grab the boxes...My fuse was a little bit damaged but easily fixed. Exchange some email with Tony and you ll see what is a professional dealer, everything worked fine and Tony was there every time I had something to ask, always on time with shipment etc...It is one of the best company I have ever deal with ! Feel free you wont get disappointed ! The quality is awesome and the included hardware are just incredible, never seen a plane coming with that much ! I got the blue flame, still bad ass for a rtf scheme ![]() My setup is more classical with the 6 servos in the ailerons, on the rudder I put 4 Hitec 5965 and 4 8611A on the elevator. I used the fiber arms coming with the kit for the rudder and I dont know yet if i ll use them for the elevator and ailerons as well. Engine is a 3w157CS with Pefa's, Im wating for 1/2in. standoffs The building is going well but slowly, I ll put some picture next time I ll work on it. Still waiting for wires, battery and I need to find a way to mount my canisters (thats the big part )![]() ![]()

Looks great, I really like the blue flame. Keep us posted and let me know what your RTF weight is with the cans and full servo compliment.

Looks good, with 4 servos in the tail and 4 on the rudder, I would expect you will need to put your batteries on the motor box. Mine balanced with the batteries basically on the cowl line, and I only have 2 servos on elevators and rudder.

well the canister setup will maybe balance. Maybe i should place them as much to th front as possible. I still need this stupid flex.
Question: what kind of wire setup did you use for your servo ? Im thinking about going with thick wire like 18AWG. |

I am using 20 awg wire. It is as thick as you can get with standard connectors. Radical rc can make them any length you want. I think 22 awg would work fine as well.

While 18awg sounds like it would be a good idea, it would add a bunch of weight to the plane. I am using Airwild 22 guage wire that I make my self. Once you do a few of them it does not take long to do. I also like the hitec wire from servo city.

I agree for the extra weight, my wire weights arround 500g (21oz). For the plug I ll go with DB9 serial plug.
I think I ll change my mind and use 20 or 22 AWG. |
