Ok great. The only other thing I can not figure out are two of the four pieces fo ply other than the firewall. The top and bottom pieces are self explanatory but the the other two - one seems like it could be used to block the cannister tunnel or perhaps can be hollowed out and used for supporting cannisters but can not not figure out the fourth piece. anybody ?

Also, why do most people mount the engines on Yaks so far forward. Is this a CG issue or is there a benefit to a longer nose moment ?

CG and to get the prop clear of the cowl. On round cowl airplanes the performance is better if you move the prop out 1.5" or so from the cowl.

My Krill Yak came out very tail heavy ... this one may be better.

Chris is dead on about prop performance. The balance on this plane may be tailheavy if you use 4 elevator servos. I only used two, but did not use a spinner. My batteries are just forward of the back of the cowl on the tank tray and my balance is just where I like it. Requires slight down pressure on an inverted 45 upline.

I enclosed the top of the motor box and that was it. I did not use any of the other wood. I closed off the can tunnel by ironing monokote across the front of it.

Man Wreck....i gotta say , that's one of the best looking Yaks i've seen to date! I think Pilot RC is stepping up the game big time by doing a custom scheme for people!

I am going to read through this thread completely , but before i do , what was the cost of the custom color scheme anyways? I know over on TBM they list that custom schemes are available , i just don't know how to go about ordering up one when it becomes time.

Is Tony the guy we need to talk to about getting a custom scheme done? or do we send it through TBM? I'm think of ordering up a custom 35% yak before to long. But if it takes a couple months , i may have to put the order in here real quick.

I'm still slobbering over you yak....sheeesh , that thing beautiful!

I could not be more pleased with my Yak. It flies great, it is very light for its sized, the covering is fantastic, it comes with all the carbon fiber components, it comes with most of the work done for you, and best of all you can have it like you want it.

If you don't make some minor changes like I did, you could have this thing built in a day. All I did differently was use a different tank and mount it in the can tunnel under the wing tube, use an SWB rudder Tray, and mount the motor using the stand the plane on its tail to center it in the cowl (my holes were slightly off fromt the template, but I used 3/4" standoffs to get the motor spacing I wanted), I am a slow builder and John and I got it done in 2 days.

Personally, I would skip dealing with TBM and go direct to Tony at Pilot-RC. I handled everything by email and it was very easy. Unless he changed things you have to pay by paypal, either with paypal balance or credit card. His pricing for custom schemes is:

$65 for one 50CC plane
$95 for one 85CC plane
$105 for one 100CC plane
$145 for one 150CC plane

He is running a deal right now for $1049 plus shipping for the 100cc yak, and $1599 including shipping with a DL111. I am partial to DA but I would think hard about the DL111 for that price. It took about 3 weeks from when I paid to the time I got it, and the plane was actually delivered in 2 days from the time it was shipped.

Go ahead and get the custom scheme, you won't regret it. I looked at hundreds of planes before I settled on the scheme I got and I love it. They took great care to get it right. Because I took the scheme from an extra they had to paint part of the canopy so the line would be continous, there is a picture in the thread showing were he caught the mistake and redid it.

The tailwheel is not so good, but I know where you can get a good replacement

Good luck and post some pictures when you get it.

John

WOW!!....$105.00 for a custom scheme 35%....that's incredible! I have to wait another week or so , and i'm going get one of these ordered up. I went and checked out their website as well , and i like one of their schemes they have on an extra as well. But i'm going to get something completely different. Thanks John for all the info!

Ok, together with a couple of friends, we ordered three of these between us and one fo them was test flown yesterday. Everything was great (as expected) except there was an issue with engine vibration. The engine is a well run 3W 150 and it was taken off another airframe so we had something to compare it to. The shaking was there all the way through to about 30% throttle. Will try another prop although this was a Beila 30 x 12 balanced both horizontally and vertically. I have not glued the firewall on mine in place as yet but am certainly inclined to use a plate to spread the footprint of the engine. Has anyone else experienced anything like this ?

Mine certainly vibrates, but I don't think it is any more so than it did when it was on the Krill Yak. I am using 3/8" lasercut shims instead of standoffs.

Here are some pictures from this past weekend. It was Yak Central.

Pilot RC 37.5% Yak 54
Carden 37% Yak 54
Comp-Arf 3.0 Yak 55

After about 15 flights, I am really getting to love it, I will try and get some in flight pictures.

Nice photos Wreck. I got to maiden mine last weekend. I ended up putting a plate to spread the engine footprint. Took the firewall to the edge of the side bearers and wrapped the front corners with biased carbon cloth and 1.5" aluminium angles on the outside to sandwich the carbon and finished it off with through bolts as supplied - did need to use slightly longer 3mm bolts though. Very little vibration if any with the ZDZ 160 Super on standard mufflers. But what a machine - my second manouvre was a knife edge loop and it was effortless. I was a little skeptical about the ailerons but they are very effective - put in a few four point torque rolls. Only got one flight in because I had been working till two in the morning for the last few days to finish it off. Now putting on smoke for next weekend.

The only issue I faced was the steering collet guide on the rudder attachment came off from the tail wheel assembly and to my surprise it was free wheeling on landing - luckily the low rates on the rudder were effective enough to avoid going into the protective fence around the fliers box or else I would have had a banged up leading edge - now that would have wiped the perpetual smile off my face.

There have been issues with that thing falling off the rudder. I think the best thing is glue threaded rod into the rudder and screw a ball-link to it for the wire to run through. I changed my whole assembly out to a J&J Tailwheel and just connected some cables to the rudder horn.

Good idea Wreck. I'll try this first. If it doesn't work, I'll just do what you have done.
