Affordable way into gas planes!

A few things come to mind when looking for an affordable way into gas planes. One being price, the next is the performance of the airframe and how you have it equipped! Not all of us flying have loads of money that we can throw at this wonderful hobby. If we did, we would all be flying larger planes and pulling a trailer! But for the average guy trying to cut his teeth on gas it can be overwhelming. I would like to show what a guy on a budget can build! You can have the performance to do IMAC and 3D without breaking the bank. The plan is to build a quality 3D plane for under $1300.00. Show you the build and make it easy to duplicate for the new guy starting out.
http://wildharerc.com makes wonderful kits that are built light and strong. http://troybuiltmodels.com sells a brand of servos called the Power HD servos. They are an affordable servo with decent speed and torque! There are a number of 50cc motors on the market but a new one I really like is from http://SouthEastRCEngines.com Ron from SERCE designed a killer new 50cc that fits this project perfect. Batteries will be Fromeco lithium ion and a set of MPI switches.
Cost round up:
Wild Hare RC’s new 87” Extra 260 $469
Wild Hare RC’s hardware kit $70
South East RC Engines new 50cc XYZ-5HP $329.95
Troy Built Models Power HD 9150 Servos $167.50 for 5
MPI Switches $15ea. 2 needed
Fromeco Lithium Ion 2600mah $35 2 needed
Spinner is optional
MPI Regulator $25 ea 2 needed
Wiring 4 extensions
Vess 22a prop $32
MPI Servo Arms $45
Total $1,263.45

I think one thing that is neglected for people who want to get into giant scale is the cost of the charger for the batteries and the gas can and pump for gassers.

Nice thread!

Wild Hare RC Extra 260 Fast Build with hardware kit

I received the plane in good condition, even though the box had a UPS hole in it. Luckily for me it was poked in at an empty space. The plane was double boxed and each part wrapped in plastic and foam. The first thing I do is to inspect all parts and the covering. All was good. Now on to building this beauty. I followed the book, not much of one! But if you have assembled a couple ARF’s then you will not have any problems. The books says, assemble the wings on the wing tube. There was a slight problem. But it was an easy fix. There was a small glue blob in the wing tube. What I did was to run my dremel with a sanding hone. I ran it down it until the tube would slide without forcing it.

Now on to the motor box. I like to pin the box, so this was an easy job. I first used some 1/8th inch dowel and Elmer’s wood glue. Then I trimmed off the excess. I then fuel proofed the engine box with 30 minute epoxy, thinned with alcohol.

Nice thread!
Noted, but Troy Built Models sells a nice 2 gallon can with manual pump, for about $60. Plus the fact that many guys who start flying larger scale planes, have had previuos planes with lipos. So they may have these items already.

An electric pump on a 50cc plane is way overkill. I like the hand pumps anyway. Gives you something to do while you bull crap with the guys.LOL
